Thread: Nickel Plated Lead Shot - where to buy?!

Been looking at loading some 20g rounds for the pheasant season coming around eventually, but finding it impossible to get me hands on any nickel Plated Lead Shot in NZ. Does anyone know where?!

The claim for this is better penetration and less pellet deformation. Lead shot is more "efficient" as the slight deformation of the pellets produces an irregular profile that is better at causing tissue damage than a true sphere. As to better patterns due to it staying more round. Fire enough steel at a pattern board and you'll see a random variation in pellet distribution, same for lead.
Apart from the price I doubt you'll notice any difference between that and uncoated lead in the field.

Have used copper plated lead shot without any noticeable difference, cut open a shell, the plating was so thin, a marketing gimmick is my thoughts on plated lead shot

You would be much better off to find the hardest shot you can ,

I have found, that good quality copper and nickel shot, doesn't drag as many feathers into the meat,
likely because its a bit harder, and doesn't deform as bad, as straight lead,
However black cloud, is by far the worst feather dragger shot, of any type, I have found.

rather funny isnt it how folks look at bird shooting from completely different angles???
one bloke wants as tight of pattern as he can get...perfectly round hard shot
next bloke wants open scatter pattern and the softer shot deforms better
another wont care whats in gun as long as it goes bang and bird drops

fella with two barrels can have one of each ..and by playing musical chokes can make it even more so.

phesants arent armour plated and #6 lead has pretty much been the standard for years....Ive shot only a handful biggest shot was #2 lead and smallest would be #3 steel..... they arent hard to kill if you can hit them.

just use a 12, be cheaper in the end

the 0nly copperplated load i liked and used on geese often was the federal 36 gram copper plated 16 gauge game shock
it was deadly out of a modified choke to 40 metres plus on farms and when lead was legal
It was one load readily available and deadly along with the remington express 32 gram straight lead 4,s . or federal if remmys were out of stock

I shudder to think what you would pay for those shells nowdays?
$1 each? More?
