question for you shotgun experts

ok i acquired a winny 37a single shot today ....research suggests its a mid to late 70s vintage anyways i pulled it apart and the first thing i did was have a look down the tube and it was filthy , probably never cleaned........... so i gave it the hell clean most of it came up shiney but for a small patch of what im thinking is rust damage maybe some moisture settled in that spot while being stored laying down .......
so the question is will it have much or any effect on accuracy should i get in there and polish it out or not worry , or should i consider a sleeve or just hang it on the wall (new single shots arent that expensive)

Pitting won't affect accuracy it's a "scatter gun" they don't look overly deep compared to some you see on sxs guns. What does the missing but do, it's not obvious from the drawing is it an extractor

nah its not critical just the little finisher on the fore-end so it sits snug to the receiver ..... the first pic you can see it missing

Put a brass brush on a rod and put on a drill give it a Reem

I bought a "demo" shotgun unseen and the barrel was filthy. Spent money on specialist cleaning products which didn't work. A good soaking with WD40 and it came right!

As for the rest of the gun, maybe tie a piece of string around the trigger and hide behind a tree for the first shot :D

its a 20g(deciphered from writing on 1st photo ),says also chambered for 2/34&3"loads.Id be placing it against a large stump or fencepost ,then using the string (long)remote to detonate the 1st charge and a couple more just to verify it dont have any bad habits like kids and wives.i
f its still in one piece after this then approach it gingerly clean the shite out of it and sell it to some unsuspecting bugger (just joking)

thats what slip on recoil pads are made for...you want punishment try remington hypersonic...fark they are naaasty

When I started trap shooting in the early 70's the old boys were useing 36grm loads in there light English sxs,
Now the Olympic shooters shoot 24grm loads and with better results.

for sure...but if youve ever shot rabbits for a living,you will KNOW that the above load kills far and away better than anything else even close in price....yip a good mate shot hundreds of bunnies with 7.5 target loads...but his ranges were kept much shorter than what I could safely manage.
MOST people using a beat up old single shot .12ga arent going to be going through a case of ammunition a day/night its a few well placed shots and the meat bag is full.... reloading steel for our young fella showed me how good a light load can be.... but its still not quite as good as a normal load,close but not quite the same.


MY BAD saw origonal photo and ASSUMED 12GA...... definately agree oz or less is way to go in .20ga.

Just my opinion, but from the pic that barrel pitting looks pretty deep, not sure id be brave enough to run heavy loads through it. Pics can be decieving.
If in doubt send it to the gunsmith.

Where u based Scotty ? Elios gun shop South Dunedin has a box of old fore-ends at the back of the shop I can have a look in there next time I’m passing I believe I got a 37 forend from there a while back

cheers im up in waikato . this thing is a 37a (apparently a little different to the 37) but i only need the little forend spacer , i know numrichs sell repro steel or ali ones but it looks like a hassle for something so small.

just an update once stripped down and cleaned the serial # was visible 1092788.....or something close to that i get a bit dyslexic with numbers (onset of old timers disease maybe)
over a million anyway so certainly not a rare collectable as suggested i will probably run some light target loads thru it to start off
