Thread: Shotgun mod advise

Hi Team

I have a winchester silver pigeon u/o
which fits me like a glove. The action
is slick and bore's in good nic.
It's a 2 - 3/4 inch lead gun with fixed chokes full and half which doesn't work for the type of upland game shooting I'm into. Ic choke is my go too on my duck gun but she's too heavy to lug around undulating rooster country and not as safe, being a semi.

I've been told my a gun smith mate that I could possibly fit some briley chokes. Has anyone here got experience or gone down this track?

Is it worth the $ or should I bite the bullet as it were and buy a new shotgun.

Just open them up.its not hard to do at all. I can talk you through it.will take ten minutes tops to do job.

Brierly thin walls could be an option if you think you may need flexibility. Have a conversation with your smith barrels in hand. He'll quickly say yes or no.

Is there anybody in nz fitting briely chokes? I stand correction but I think not.
Miles gunshop in Australia your only option.ive had to sets of barrels done by briely in Houston.

Nah.a drill and grinding stone ,picked up in six pack off bargain table at mitre 10 etc. slowly n gently keeping honing stone parallel. Stop n measure often and keep it even all around. I've done a few now with cruder methods but honing stone is too easy. Can finish off with superfine Emery /sand paper on a dowel/ rod/ car tyre iron if feel the need. It's NOT rocket science. All your doing is SLIGHTLY opening the hole in the end...most older chokes,the construction is only in last half n inch/ 12mm so it's too easy to remove a LITTLE bit of metal and make it a more open choke. Be carefully to not remove too much as once it's gone it's gone for good.

I'd let you have a go on a old Russian. Not so sure I'd let you loose on a Purdy though.

I've seen baikals you can't get a choke gauge into, super full plus. This is a Winchester not purdy, so grind away

Ah yes but Marty,that is deceiving as the bakail bore is tighter to begin with so has same degree of construction/%of choke/amount of squeeze. You need to be aware of it when contemplating opening chokes of will do as backyard shop owner did to mates one and by trying to alter to 1/4 choke he took it out completely as bore reads pretty close to quarter.

Brake cylinder hone works ok, but do aittle then patter test, then again etc. Use plenty kero or cutting fluid.

that works if there is at lest 50mm of solid rib left and its a welded rib not soldered .

But only if you want cylinder and cylinder eg ALL your shooting is under 30 yards.
