@outlander Reassuring........As I have the Lyman 525 grain slugs, WAA12 wads and APN70 N, I would appreciate you telling your AP70N load, (grams/ grains / ounces) , as I was going to start from scratch, reinvent the wheel with 23 grains working upwards, ( which I suspect would involve a few "starts") so your end point weight and observation on effective range would be greatly appreciated.

Sure. Through my el cheapo Gun City 18" pump cylinder bore riot gun, the 525 gr Lyman slugs leave the barrel @ 1050 fps avg. with 23.5 gr of AP70N. With 24 gr AP70N they go 1100 fps avg. You can expect another 100-150 fps through a 26"/28" barrel with a full choke.

My thanks @outlander for you information. I shall stick with the WAA12 wads as they are a nice fit for the slug and I have i i/2 bags of them :>)
Surprised that I wasn't too far off with my starting figure of 23 grains..

They will be fired from a 20 inch barrel and as I am interested in the effective range can you give an opinion on that? Effective IMHO being up to 6 inches off the bull.......or is that the best I can expect.

I ask 'cos this week I found I grouped 4 of 5, 6 inches off @ 50 metres and that I consider being 'cos I had only set up the red spot sight using a Nikko Stirling Bore Sight Kit to "get onto paper".

So, a comment on effective range would be greatly appreciated.

My pump has ghost ring sights and in my experience with the Lyman slugs, 5" off bull @ 50 metres, would make me very happy. I also find that the Lyman slug is the least accurate of the three. Lee 1oz and the round ball always is better.

Some time ago I hunted wild bulls in tiger country that were tagged as possibly spreading TB. Tight country with the odd 50-75m window for a shot. My goodness I never felt undergunned with a pump loaded with roll your own slugs

With roughly three times the energy of a .44 mag, I can imagine. Can you recall which slug it was that you used?
