Got my new pup 'Ace' on Thursday. She is a black lab and I am going to train her to be a duck dog.

Arguing with an Engineer is like Wrestling a Pig in Mud.
After awhile you realise the Pig loves it.
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.

Good work, @Sean...I like how you are making her wait for her meals...they learn "manners" with such training...go Ace!!

Good start. Eebees is right about them learning manners this way, but they the real training for this and control will come much later.
Try not to repeat ANY command. Give the one sound you want the pup to associate with the action and then correct, or if still teaching the meaning... push the back end down so it does it after being told once. This is not just so you don't always have to repeat commands but it stops the pup from being confused. Because they don;t speak any language and only associating sounds with an action it is crucial, to get a well trained compliant dog to be very resolute in this.
Let me explain a bit more why this is so important. The dog doesn't learn a word.. just a sound associated with an action. "Sit" or "Sit, Sit", or "Sit, Sit, Sit" is three different sounds to a dog, because there is only a sound, not a word. To expand on that I use a single tone whistle with my adult dogs. There are only three commands. One peep is "stop", two peeps is "turn and hunt the other way" and three peeps is "Come here". The whistle only makes one tone and sound and yet it means something totally different depending on how many times it hears it. In the human world repeating a word reinforces it, in the canine world it confuses.
