WTF???
Great choice. We've got two miniature shorthairs. Yes people take the piss out of me all the time. They are great little dogs with heaps of personality and are very clever. Mine regularly chase possums and wild pigs around our place (yet to catch up with any of the latter). Equally happy crawling in front of the fire and with legs 3 inches long they don't really need any walking.
Back problems are always a potential issue and we've had two serious rounds of slipped discs in one of ours. Be careful and buy from good breeder.
We managed to source both ours in New Zealand but seriously looked at importing one from Australia - there are a lot more over there and importing them although expensive is doable. You might want to look into that.
Check out this guys videos, he uses daschunds on sambar, foxes etc

Our big standard Black and Tan was put down this week. We are after one or two also. They are very "in" at the moment, particularly the minis.

They are mint pets - very head strong
Badger Dogs
Brilliant Dogs.
Dachshund means "Badger Dog" in German.
If you have ever seen a pissed off Badger, then you'll know any dog that can tangle with one in a burrow is made from stern stuff.
We had one as kids "Fritz" Wonderful, but as said, bloody headstrong. I thought they had all but disappeared.
Not a weird question at all, PerazziSC3 ... I have send in them action on rats ... merciless little dogs ... have see them at dog shows ... oooopsss, perhaps I shouldn't have written that!!!
Pretty cool dogs alright
Perazzi, Daschunds are one dog where it is really worthwhile to see pups and parents before you buy. Confirmation is everything if you are to avoid expensive vet bills later on. Particularly backs and legs (front and back). The breed standard is a good guide. If you need a copy pm me your email address.

we had one as pet when I was a kid, bloody snappy thing.
They are still a working dog in Germany.
Im from germany, so yeah, i had 2 dachshunds, one a wire-haired in black-brown and the other one a short-haired in fox-red.
Both dogs were strong (regarding their body limits) and headstrong too. The need a firm but fair hand and they wand to be part of the pack.
Mine were always in the house, and behaved friendly with kids and foreigners... but once i shot a boar that the wire.haired drove towards me. He was guarding it while i went to get somebody to help me recover the boar from the woods. Another hunter, a huge and fairly strong bloke, i met on the way told me he would get the boar, i should get the car in the meantime. I told him 3 times that just aint a good idea, well... he didnt want to listen.
When i got back to my dog and the boar the guy was standing there with his rubber boots in pieces. Dont underestimate a german dachshund! :)
Besides that they are used for fox hunting over here in germany. They go in the fox´s den and drive the fox out. As there might be badgers in there too it explains why the Teckel (as we call the dachshund in german) not only needs a strong will, perseverance and toughness, but also a lot of brains and smarts!
There are stil a lot of breeders here in germany breeding pure hunting and working dogs, albei the fact that the Teckel became the No.1 dog for grannies. There have been some problems with genetics illnesses, but hopefully this beautiful and gorgoues race will be there for many more generations.
If somebody needs more advice on breeders or anything... let me know! Happy to help!
Currently in the process of sourcing a pair of teckels for a vet, he wanted the tested stock and genetics similar to where our Drahthaars came from.
Got one Attachment 79083
You should call him frank :)
