    dog numbers

reading some interesting figures that mirror NZ I think of the decline in pointers and setters in the UK.Iwould hate to see how few S&P are rego'd here each year

You can find the registration statistics here: http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/down...tatsgundog.pdf

Here a few breeds, first number is registrations in 2010 / second in 2011:

    Gordon Setters 306 / 245

    Irish R&W 83 / 119

    English Setters 349 / 234

    Irish Setters 1126 / 869

    Pointers 678 / 751

interesting when you compare these figures to the following gundog breeds:

    German Shorthaired Pointer 1410 / 1424

    Hungarian Vizsla 1498 / 1588

    Weimaraner 1969 / 1581

    Europe to the rescue

    From the BBC website:
With 234 registrations last year, the setter joins 24 other dogs considered to be at risk of extinction on the club's list of Native Vulnerable Breeds. British and Irish breeds are added when puppy registrations drop below 300 in a year.

With 20 thousand English Setter pups whelped per year in Italy alone, and another 5000 or so each in France and Spain, not to mention the thousands bred in North America and elsehwere, there is absolutely no threat of extinction, but we may see the disappearance of a great breed from its native land.

< BBC News - UK native dog breeds 'at risk of extinction' >

If they aren't able to hunt, then this will happen.

those figure are not a correct indication of the actual working litters bred...... the total is very small... but sustainable as working breeds.
intersting the wiems have the highest registration as they are not rated as feild dogs any more, and looks like the vizsla is heading that way too.

the versatiles have seen the decline of the setters and pointers for decades, both in the uk and here.

Things go up and down, looking at it over two years is statistically false. Of all those stats the majority will be show stuff as stated above; as for the numbers above on HPRs, none of them would have been working litters. Is it better to have ten great litters or five hundred litters of shit? Working strain setter and pointer litters will always be a very small part of the statistics

Yeah saw that - What shocked me is that the Weimeraner tops that list in popularity! Shows that the English have lost their sense of taste, or just lost their senses

One wonders about how much a loss of the ability of the average Jo to go and shoot is effecting these numbers and Weis are a more poular pet .The other countries may be changing laws and views more slowly than England where it is harder in general to participate in shooting sports than other countries

Thats the thing - it's England, the average Jo could never have just popped out for a shoot. Those that are inclined to, have done, and always will. And I bet they don't take a weim with them
