Thread: Dogs for pheasants, upcoming litters?

Hey,

My dog is getting old so I am thinking of a new pup in the near future. Missus and I are expecting soon so am looking for something that is a little more low key than a GSP. I was hoping to grab one of the Viszla's that @GSP put up but was too slow... Can anyone point me in the direction of a good litter with solid bird pedigree? Will consider Viszlas, Brittneys or even another GSP from the right breeding. Or any other suggestions are welcome....

mate has a litter of german DK's due in a month or so.

Prefer pointer but if I bought a wee Cocker home Im sure I wouldn't be turned away...

Can help with the cocker, but if ya used to the range of a pointer and have low bird numbers then a spaniel can mean a lot of extra walking, mind you the rabbit hunting is all year round.
I will let ya know about the Dk litter once he has confirmed the ai took.

Can anyone explain setter and pointer?
I get a pointer will stop and point. What does a setter do?
And what's with the range. Does a pointer stay close to you?

whilst these days they refer to separate breeds, they once referred to how they operated. These days pointer and setter are very much the same, except some old strains of setter genuinely set, which is a kind of stretched out sphinx position when they find game, as opposed to pointers which should stand game

I agree at some stage the setter forgot to set.
Range is everything with these dogs, in fact the range issue also defines a few of the versatiles too.
More ground they can cover= more chance to find a bird or covey.
To see them hunt is pretty bloody cool.

have you seen a NZ setter that set? I haven't. As opposed to the European ones which often still do it?

Mine does at times. I don't like it, it is harder to find the dog. Will try find a photo.
I know it sounds like a broken record but i am planning on a litter in the spring. I have two great bitches lined up so have a plan B. My dog is getting old.

Ages ago, the Pointer and Setter Club held a Christmas do at Equine Estate and Mr Hendren was walking his dogs...I had never seen before the crawl etc of the English Setter...I was completely engrossed...beautiful sight...what really cracked me up was as we were enjoying lunch, pheasants were under the tables...

Sorry guys should have mentioned I would like a versatile breed due to me doing a fair bit of deer stalking, prefer short coat too. Only reason I mentioned a cocker is the missus lives them so there wouldn't be much pressure to take it chasing deer...

When you say range issue as in spaniels don't range as far as pointers?
