    Howling dog

One of my 3 labs (the pup of the other 2 and about 2 years old) howls at night. Sometimes during the day even when out in their big yard. He doesn’t bark, just a moaning howl.

Should I be looking at a collar to give him a buzz (tone) and a verbal telling off?

    Advice appreciated.

Hook up sprinkler so it will wet kennel run.run hose back through window into washhouse and hook up to washing machine tap.most will take the same fitting as outside tap.when dog howls, creep down n turn on hose till shuts up. Collars sometimes don't work, our old but h worked out sho could bark even with it on.

No help, but an engineer colleague used a citronella collar on his yappy handbag dog.
A bark would arm the collar, a subsequent bark within 10 seconds the dog would get a squirt.
The dog learnt to count to eleven instead…

Bark collar. Couple of hefty whacks to remind him/her not to make the noise , then turn the collar off but leave it on the dog to see if the message got through.

Collars are useless if you put them on low settings - you are trying to educate the dog , and they dont have human powers of understanding.

Sounds tough but you either want to stamp out that behaviour or you dont ....

definately tell him to shut up.....the neighbours wont be impressed and neither will you if he does it when out hunting...hopefully once he learns what you mean, the issue will disapear.

This sprang into my mind also. I'd be trying to find out what the root cause is first before applying any punitive action. Is he alone when it happens ? Are there any noises that set him off ? My old Rottie used to howl every time the rural fire siren went off and it was over 10 km away. It took me a few weeks before I heard it too and made the connection.

Years ago , early 2000’s I had a GSP ( German Shorthaired Disapointer ) that would Yodel and Howl everyday at the same time .
It didn’t really annoy me , but it did make me curious.
Finally worked out that Radio NZ in those days had the Candenza show on which was Opera etc and the Wife had it playing in the background.
Turned out to be a bit of a party trick and all you had to do was pretend to be an Opera singer and the Dog would join in without fail .
Told the Wife to turn the Bloody racket off and never had a problem after that .

He’s being doing it for a long time. We’re rural. Can’t reach a hose from house to barn. Collar seems best bet.

Consistantly for a long time or sporadic?
I have a dog which has been howling sporadically for a number of years, but usually when there's a bitch on heat in the area.

Trim up your labs. They look well conditioned. An exhausted dog generally does not have the energy to howl. Used to own 2 . 2C.
