Thread: Labradors in NZ for shooting and hunting

When reading on this forum and looking at photos, I notice the labrador is very popular in NZ . In the UK he is purely used as a retriever, in Belgium the same and a very small number as roughshooting dogs.
If I am not wrong the labrador in NZ is used for all sporting purposes, roughshooting, duck, deer, boar, farm ,.......... Just how popular is the breed?

Seriously Hales, although I am no expert, the lab is used extensively in NZ. Mostly for ducks and pheasants, but also on deer (if you can get a quiet one that stops panting long enough!!)

They are the most popular breed by a long shot, sadly, the majority in use and not good for much... there are some exceptional ones though, here they should roundly be described as a versatile, ducks, deer,, bunnies, pheasant, quail, pigs, and anything else... you have to understand... NZ has possibly the worst dog trainers in the world... and the lab suits the lackadaisical style perfectly.

They have also been put into huntsway lines is a pretty hard sheep/cattle dog .

There's good ones and lots of bad one, something to do with them being so popular.

Dare I mention the showring.... the dogs conformation is, to me, all over the place...the long the short and the tall...boffy heads, narrow heads...short tails...how any decent judge can make sense of them I do not know...
