Facts and Fallacies

Fallacy... Some dogs are untrainable.

Fact... All dogs are trainable. Some just require more skill to control than others because of their 'personality type''.

Fallacy... Older dogs can't be trained.

Fact... Age plays no part in a dog's ability to learn.

Fallacy... Some dogs are more intelligent than others.

Fact... Some dogs are certainly easier to train/control because they are either more biddable or have inherited a desire to work. This does not mean they are more intelligent.

Fallacy... Neutering makes dogs better behaved and easier to train.

Fact... The human influence in a dog's life far outweighs changes made to its hormonal balance. Although some dogs may show some behaviour modification when neutered, the vast majority do not. However, neutering is highly recommended for other reasons.

Fallacy... Neutering stops dogs wandering.

Fact... Contrary to popular belief, it does not. Regardless of training or neutering, a fully fenced section is a must for your dog's safety and your sanity. It is best to fence your dog in a way that allows visitors access to the front door without coming into contact with your dog.

Fallacy... Neutering remedies aggressive behaviour.

Fact... Because aggressive behaviour is a 'learned behaviour', it will not.

Fallacy... Food rewards are necessary to train dogs.

Fact... Offering food to dogs to 'get your way' is simply bribery. It is unquestionably the quickest way to lose respect from your dog. Reliable control, especially 'when it really matters' will never be achieved without the development of respect and this simply cannot happen with 'bribe training'.

Fallacy... You should eat before your dog to reinforce your leader status.

Fact... This theory is nonsense. Because you are not competing with your dog for survival, it makes absolutely no difference who eats first.

Fallacy... Dominance techniques such as scruff shaking, holding down in the submissive position, making eye contact are sometimes necessary to show your dog you're the 'boss'.

Fact... Nothing could be further from the truth. These techniques were naively made popular many years ago on the incorrect assumption that in order to train a dog you need to behave like a dog. Apart from not working, these practices nearly always induce undesirable behaviour such as cringing or aggression, where biting is a real possibility.

Fallacy... Dogs know when they've 'done wrong'.

Fact... Dogs have no understanding of right or wrong, good or bad or other such moral values. All too often, the submissive reaction demonstrated by dogs when they are 'told off' or 'disciplined' is unfortunately misunderstood as 'he knows he's done wrong' when in fact it is only acting submissively in response to its owner's anger, with no understanding of why...

Fallacy... Dogs learn from the 'tone of your voice'.

Fact... The 'tone of voice' method of training is simply verbal dominance. The word 'NO'! (or more recently 'BAH'!) is nearly always used with this type of training, but unfortunately because dogs don't speak English, they only hear them as threatening sounds. Any favourable response induced occurs only because the dog was intimidated or distracted, not because it understood. Undesirable side effects are almost inevitable from the use of 'tone of voice' training. They include submissive behaviour such as cringing or in the case of strong minded dogs, aggressive behaviour where biting can easily occur.

Fallacy... Electric dog collars are a valuable aid to training.

Fact... In the ‘wrong hands’ these are disastrous devices, which can cause severe psychological damage. While there are some situations, with certain dogs (and in the ‘right hands’), where these collars can be useful and humanely effective, they will always be an unnecessary tool for skilled handlers.

Fallacy... Young dogs need to play with other dogs to become 'socialised'.

Fact... Allowing young dogs to interact in a robust, physical manner should be totally avoided. Naively called 'play', this practice in fact teaches dogs the art of fighting. The development of aggressive behaviour as the dog matures is highly likely.

Fallacy... You need a strong authoritative voice to control a dog.

Fact... Such an approach ensures that your dog becomes conditioned to only responding when a certain threat level is reached. As your dog becomes desensitised to the threat, increased threat levels will become necessary. The best results come from using a 'normal voice' in association with psychologically effective reinforcement techniques. The occasional and selective use of an authoritative voice can then be used to your advantage in situations of emergency.

Fallacy... Dogs that kill livestock should be destroyed.

Fact... Although in many cases unacceptable, the natural normal prey chasing instincts that dogs inherit mean that this behaviour can never be considered abnormal. All livestock killing incidents are the result of either inadequate fencing or insufficient control by the owner. Destroying the dog unfairly shifts the blame.

Fallacy... Dogs that bite people should be destroyed.

Fact... Canine aggression, as with all species (including humans) is a natural, normal, instinctive reaction to specific, provocative stimuli. While maybe unacceptable, it is never abnormal. All biting incidents are the result of either poor management or insufficient control by the owner. Destroying the dog unfairly shifts the blame.

Fallacy... Some dogs bite even when unprovoked.

Fact... There's no such thing as an unprovoked attack. Dogs only bite when their natural, normal instincts are activated by provocative stimuli.

Fallacy... Some dogs are naturally aggressive.

Fact... All aggressive behaviour is learnt by experience, regardless of predisposition factors such as breed and personality type. The owner is totally responsible for their dog's experiences.

I'm a big Paul Hutton fan ... we've worked with him on our dogs and he's amazing.

You may not agree with everything he writes, but if you ever get to meet him you will recognise his instant Mana with the four legged friends and I've never met anyone who better can see life from a dogs point of view ...

kiwi I am sure you are correct and we could all learn from his years of professional experience ! I may one day shout myself a course to understand dog psyche alot more .. we should always keep an open humble mind -dont have to agree always but never shut the eyes to sound methods

Trying to determine his method is difficult. He seems to denounce a few methods and reading between the lines and from all reviews he knows, and trains dogs very well. However I hear he is moving away from it nowadays.

Therefore trying to research how one should train their dog is hard, Koehler's methods are hated in the media, Clicker training and treat based training seem to be the most 'sold' online.

I am just reading Gundog Sense and Sensibility by Wilson Stephens for an insight into how dogs think. I have Dog Whisperer, have Koehlers book on order, and would be interested if you know any good books on the topic.

i myself do not have any training specific books as such . i do have Leon Mortenson's book of his life history dogging

professional dog trainers in this country are pretty much the same, even the cold hard facts trainers like paul hutton.
clicker training, positive enforcement and the dreaded food methods, are just that, fads, a bit of each already gets used in some form with traditional training methods.
there are books and dvd's out there for the spaniels and retrievers which can just about map out and complete a trained dog, however some basic common dog sence needs to be installed to the budding trainer first, it's a shame paul hutton is scaling back as I think he could have done well with a road show circuit a few times a year.

yes ! first the trainer needs to be trained .I agree with you Kawhia , Paul could have done a profitable road show for sure !

So what is a non fad traditional training method? And how would one learn about this to train the trainer?

the formats are there for those that want to learn, you can only get so much from a book.
look outside the square go to where dogs are being used in a competitive or working environment, it don't have to be gundog related.
I'm currently getting a lot of experienced advice from the police dog and shultzhund people for instance, it's all part of the learning curve.

To train the trainer would come two fold I believe .Firstly trained by reading and understanding a proven trainers methods -mentality and character one needs to employ while going about ones training -secondly the field test that the training is working in the the field which shows in your team work with your dog . It is only bribery to us...the dog does not comprehend the bribery notion...all it knows is that if it complies with the command it will be rewarded with food (the old Pavlov equation), usually something like a cheerio or cheese which the dog has a very great liking to...yeah, I'll retrieve the stupid dummy if you give me that cheese...

I did a little test of my young dog...he was a natural retriever and we worked up to canvas dummies...I offered him pieces of schmackos...he then starting dropping the dummy about three feet or more from me...schmackos put away, retrieved to hand again...they are not stupid!!

Paul Hutton does not think much of the NZ Police dogs at all and has asked them to give him a public demonstration of how they can call a dog off someone if they find it is the wrong person. They declined.

NZ Police dogs are trained fulltime....time the everyday NZ hunter does not have.

Understood that only so much can be gained from a book, but it is a good head start, and difficult to get out with dogs whilst deployed.

Praising your dog and giving a treat is just like a double up of the praise (reinforcer).

Some people need to use a treat to get their dogs attention on them. I have noticed often that some dogs don't even respond to their name, which tells something of how much the dog is (not) going to respond to its owner.

In the end your praise should mean so much to the dog you don't need to reinforce with a treat.

A baby puppy can begin to learn heel by following a treat but the chucking of food around and relying on it to bait the dog in just will not work when the dog has something else on its mind that it feels is more of a reward. It hasn't really learnt who is the leader in the team. Soon as many of these dogs get into a new open area where they can run free and enjoy themselves what the owner wants no longer has high priority, or much priority at all.

It does no good to state "don't use treats" because they are of great assistance, used sensibly.
If one persons dog drops the dummy to get a treat, it doesn't mean treats are bad, it means the trainer needs to either not use treats for this part of training, or think outside the box (a back pocket is pretty useful).

Whatever works.

Training someone elses dog can be a lot easier than training your own.

I think training for all people who are generally successful to a greater degree runs a similar course and it is following the basics from puppy to adult .
Not getting hot headed -not raising ones voice all the time to make it ineffectual and having patience - following simple routines and doing it all in a consistent manner involving a fun praised full session . Each area of training has its own disciplines of showing the dog what you would like him to do .
Unless you are running into a dog that is particularly hard headed time and consistent work together should allow a good outcome.
As far as food treats go I personally have never needed to do this although there are instances that some use this but not as a consistent part of the total training package . Keep it simple .
I cannot say I have read lots of books but am lucky enough to have been around some excellent handlers and have taken note ! I myself spend alot of time with my dogs and make them my mates -when we hunt without a gun we sometimes walk as a pack -they get told to stop and wait for me to lead them in -they understand what were doing and love it .
I have not got the control over my older dog I would like in certain cover situations but he also had many years without training so I am grateful he works now as well as he does .My young bitch I didnt start till she was over 13months old which isnt ideal either but she is showing good form to date bar the retrieve which needs more work

hehe, I guess all those border collies at agility and raly-o are just humouring their owners / trainers as well. pretty much all treat (food or play) based :)

Treat training obviously works for those guys "if" it is mainly how they train as there dogs do some pretty cool stuff at close quarters.I think that is the a very important point to recognize aswell as a dog 1,2 or 3 hundred meters away that has just been trained on the food method may not be as rulely but that is theory to say it wont be . Personally I wouldnt have a clue with out having it tested . We often battle with theory without having tested it-although some argue against because they have and others disagree because they have . The ones that I believe use the food method as an overall system appear to work with their dogs at their sides and that doesnt cut it in my opinion

Who uses the treat gig for any training at all ?? I saw Kawhia mention something that he did for a certain aspect of training -how did it work and for what ?

I understand the finer points of training will be experience based, however to even start in the right direction that knowledge must come from somewhere.

I am sure most people have gone to school, rather than just being chucked into the wider world to learn everything through experience.

There are several reasons why i do not like treat training, some of them already outlined. The flippant, but accurate comment "Try throwing a biscuit at your dog when it's chasing a cat" kind of sums most of it up for me. However, there are some things to consider without becoming too much of a smart arse. (Not always easy for me).

The point you make about dropping a treat is valid ****** however the consequence of this handling cock up is greater than in most other techniques because the dog is focused on the treat, not the handler. In other techniques the dog would still not lose focus to the handler. You will see in this video that it happens to this handler as well and when it does she has completely "lost" the dog until all the treats have been recovered and she can again get some focus from the dog.

1.53 it becomes a joke! Whenever that treat is not in the dogs face this dog couldn't give a flying fox terrier about this handler and its patently obvious.

Here's the thing. There is one situation where treat training can work for the dog handler and that is for situations where the dog will be used competitively in competition and the more "stylish" the heel is perceived the greater the advantage to win the dog and handler have. I maintain the same style of heel is very achievable without a treat, the problem is the treat way is the easiest, though weakest from a control point of view, the method that gets the same result but has true control with it is unknown to most or in the "too hard" basket!. Now, no heel up has ever won a field trial, however if you have two dogs which are hard to separate on performance but one has a better heel than the other then it might give you an advantage, especially if the judge is impressed by such superficial things. The reality is that the heel that may appear not as polished is very often more ingrained and likely to continue in real world situations where as the treat heel is more correctly just a trick the dog will do in some specific situations but not when there is high distraction! Agility dogs, competitive obedience are all ingrained in treat training, are judged by people who treat train, that is their world. That's why those dogs get titles and ribbons, treat trainers rewarding other treat trainers with treats for doing it their way. Take those dogs out of the "Situation" (Because that training is "situation pattern obedience".) and the handlers have little or no control. Watch them with their dogs lose on the beach with beach balls, kids, other dogs and see they have CONTROL whatsoever. When I was working with Paul Hutton, and I'll elaborate a lot on that later, in his early days he had a huge client base with people who had "titled obedience champions" who were coming to him to try and get some control of their dogs when not in the ring. What does that tell you about the value of that treat? In my world if there was an obedience competition, at a certain point of the heel drill someone would let a sackful of cats loose so we could actually determine who in that ring has any control whatsoever! Why? because there are two stages to having control.

The first stage, which treat training can work in is teaching the command. Dogs learn anything well when there is something in it for them. It takes seconds to teach a dog to sit in order to get a treat. The same methodology is used on Dolphins to get the to perform tricks, it doesn;t give anyone control of the dolphin... take the dolphin out of the tank, put it into it's real world and you can wave a pilchard all you like. It won;t give a flying fish!

You can get a four year old child to make a Rottweiler sit if they use a treat, no one would be naive enough to believe the child just gained control of the dog. They can, however, get it to perform a "trick" using treats!

So using treats you have taught the dog the meaning of a command, it doesn't mean it will do it reliably when under high distraction. You have taught a meaning, you have not gained control or reliable compliance under high distraction. If a distraction represents, to the dog, a higher value than the treat your request to obey a command will be ignored unless your training regime has instilled in the dog respect for you and what you request... more than just a treat, otherwise we will constantly be balancing the environment to the value of the treat!. Let's face it, any dog that finds a treat more of a distraction then game when out hunting is probably not a dog most of us would want to hunt with.

We have high prey drive dogs, genetically predisposed to focus on game... that's what we spend big money on and hope to hell the breeder is producing.

The only factor that gives the handler compliance to commands is if he or she has the dogs respect. That cannot be established with a treat! Using treats a dog will perform the taught tricks any time there is nothing better on offer and may lull the handler or even observers into believing the dog is under control... it most likely isn't. It has a set of behaviors it has been bribed into performing in specific circumstances and in the absence anything better is prepared to perform those tricks and look like a wonderfully trained dog. Bring a fleeing cat, bolting rabbit, flushing pheasant, roaring stag into the mix and see what the dog values!

A dog trained to respect it's handler, that the handler should be their focus (Not what is in their hand) will quickly value the handlers praise and approval more highly than the treat trained dog appreciates the treat because it is balanced with respect for consequences to non compliance. In saying that, consequences do not have to be harsh physical treatment. Smart modern dog handling doesn't require the rough treatment of the past.

In this video the trainer is NOT teaching heel but simply getting mannered walking on a lead. None of it is treat trained, the focus of the dog is on the handler because that is the most comfortable thing for dog. To not comply brings a correction, when complying there is no pressure. The dog gains respect for the handler and finds compliance to the handler it's most comfortable place to be. Compliance doesn't run out when the treats run out like we see in the first video. It only takes some subtle tuning of this methodology to teach a reliable, controlled heel. This continues off the lead with a few modifications.

To be fair, both videos are only a tiny glimpse into the beginnings of training and there's no point pulling either of them apart to debunk too much... but it gives an opportunity for me to point out my views on both methods.

The change of direction methodology, when done properly and taken through it full course is the same technique used to over come aggression, cat chasing, over excited interest in other dogs and more. The treat method cannot be used effectively for those issues because those issues will always, to the dog, represent a greater reward than a piece of cheese in the handlers hand.

The second method is the only one that has any elements which bring respect, compliance and actual control to the heel and when done skillfully (All dog training needs to be learned and the ability to control a high prey drive is a skill to be practiced. It doesn't just happen.) The treats will give you an appearance of it but the wheels will virtually always fall off under very high distraction in the real world and away from situation pattern obedience situations.

Having a dogs respect is the first essential to having the dog hunt with you and for you as though the pair of you are a pack working together. It cannot be done without it. You cannot teach respect with treats.

Some would maintain that by teaching the meaning of commands with treats, while simultaneously teaching consequence and compliance speeds the process up. It doesn't because in the treat process respect is breaking down. This means you may get compliance to the trick taught in the situation specific environment (Competition obedience ring, pigeon trial specific format) but that is unlikely to carry forward to having proper control in real world situations.

As ******* points out above you can't steady a spaniel to rabbits with the promise of a treat. *******, correctly pointed out that the work would be done with treats prior to steadying. This reinforces my contention. Treats can be used to teach the meaning of a command they cannot be used to gain control. Even if you taught heel, sit, down, stay, come etc all with treats when the chips are down in the hunting field the only way you are going to get a stop on game flushed off the dogs nose is if the dog has respect for the handler. To be fair in the past this has been gained more by ingraining fear of consequence in dogs than respect for consequence but that cannot be used as an argument against it, merely an illustration of poor handling for respect resulting, instead, in fear of the handler. But the high distraction situations such as flushing game off the nose and remaining steady cannot be done with treats. The game will always be of more interest than the treat. However, respect for the handler and the resulting successful hunt and retrieve (Pack success) will have more meaning to every dog than the promise of a treat or the threat of a hiding from its handler.

Are there any situations when using food is training is OK?

Yes, but not for teaching commands or trying to gain control. I have used food with some dogs to overcome phobias. I recently worked with a Labrador that had gained a severe fright whilst on a lead to the point that whenever the lead was put on the dog it would lie flat to the ground and refuse to move. By using food as a bribe the dog would move forward to get the treat breaking out of its fear mode for a second. If it retreated back into it's "safe place" of lying doggo another treat was thrown. Given the Labradors penchant for tucker it quickly forgot it's fear of the lead to find the next treat. It took about two sausage rolls, broken up, to have the dog completely forget it used to be scared of the lead. Having broken out of that mind set we could set about teaching it to walk politely on a lead without treats and set about some control work. In this situation the food actually became the distraction from the behavior... quite ironic.

While a treat trained heel looks flashy in competition with the dog, head held high, fixated on the handlers hand or face anticipating the next treat , it's not where I want any dog's attention in the field. I want the dog to maintain constant focus on me while simultaneously be taking in it's surrounds for game or just what's going on in general. Yes i get that in a retriever trial many of the behaviors can be taught with treats, but face it, In heavy cover in the Kaweka's with a Jap Stag roaring its nuts off 20 meters away you better have a better control methodology for a GWP, Visla, GSP, Lab, whatever... than a pocket full of Purina!

teaching the treat heel is of little use to the deerstalker. The dog at heel should be winding, not looking to see if a treat is coming.

At it's guts, you can teach some pretty looking tricks with treats in my opinion. It will never get you anywhere close to control. If that's OK with you then there's nothing wrong with it. It's not what I want from my hounds.

Thank you for such a large excellent write up !i like the fact you showed the use of treats also in this write up Clarke that they can add value to certain situations .I cannot imagine using treats or even why you would want to when training a dog -having those treats on me I would be just as likely to feed them to myself :D I got annoyed watching that first clip -teaching the dog to follow food ......

I am preparing a post on Paul Hutton. I met Paul when I was 23, I am now, almost 50. I have always been an obsessive dog person and as such have researched everything I ever could on dogs and training methods. In one stop at Paul Hutton's property one day I was shown, not told, shown so many unarguable truths about dog training it blew my mind. Stay tuned for that post!

I do not use treats in my training, unless I am dealing with a confidence issue as outlined above.

If you want to see control, I offer you this video. To ensure you are understanding what you are watching I have to qualify several things. 1) This is a driven Pheasant shoot.
2) You can hear the guns going off. At any given time there are 9 guns shooting at, within a 300 meter area, about 30 - 40 pheasants flying at any given moment. 3) The dog being shown is 1000% besotted with Pheasants and has been since birth. 4) The dog is having a ball, no conflict with handler, ready and capable to do her job and doing it well. Talking of distractions, you can see I am distracted trying to video the the process. We all know what liberties a dog will take knowing their handler is distracted, this should emphasize how well this dog knows it';s job. 5) This dog was sold on this day to a gun who wanted just such a dog, otherwise I would not have allowed her all the easy retrieves you see. I would have held her back only sent her for runners. 6) The most telling part of this, for me, is the bird you see her follow in order to mark, she is given the command to "leave it " (I believe it wasn't hit) and see her head snap back to the next target(1.18 mins) . I take pride in having dogs that trust me on that level, work with me on that level and do not need me to be holding a piece of cheese, a smacko, or a tidbit of any kind to pay me some attention. And we all think the suns shines out of each others arses. You'll never get that with a treat. NOTE: Real dog handling still exists, reducing it to this modern clicker/treat/positive bullshit is just buying a product being marketed, like "Natural Glow" it's got **** all to do with the real world. really good gundogs are trained and handled, not bribed, bullshitted in amusing little competition rings or at pigeon field trials. Measure a dog in the field and no where else, measure the handler by the same standard! :)

some times jumping in the deep end and learning the hard way will give you a better long term result, sure you may leave a trail of half trained mutts or disappointed women in your quest but sooner or later you will get it.

Every dog is an individual...and what may have worked for one may not work for another...they cannot be covered by any book in its entirety...I also believe that while the fundamental training is pretty much the same, training the different breeds may need tweaking the basic concepts...jumping in the deep end and learning the hard way is the tortuous method but one that certainly trains you to understand the dog...cos if you do not get that right, you may as well go and grow exhibition petunias!!!
