    I have only ever trained with a frozen duck,lot easier to get hold of .
    From what I've experienced, you can use a pheasant number of times but once its covered with saliva and the wings start to fall-of from the trowing around (before the dog retrieves it) it looses the effect.
    The only use it may have thereafter is for practice in carrying heavier weight (compared to a pigeon)...

    The dog's behavior changes when you give him a fresh (unused) pheasant , as oppose to an already used one which he's retrieved over number of times.
    They are smart enough to know what is what...
