Apart from a couple of people trialling, not much else going on for us P&S people

I was awaiting Pointers reply from Des's question ............... gosh even the hardcore are slow to forum nowadays .

Looking forward to the Novice game trial tho on the weekend and getting my young bitch use to competing -Are you going to come to the trail Z -shouldnt be to hot by the sounds of the forcast .Hope the ground allows some friggen hard running so the dogs can be amazing

My bitches sire Balder is by DKBRCH Boelsgaards Paw, who I believe Des saw win the 2008 Dansk Pointerklub Vinderklas Derby, and out of Villestoftes Rita, the 2004 Dansk Jagthunde Derby winner. Incidentally Ritas' sire Villestoftes Roy won it in 2001.

My bitches dam Zambia is by a Swedish bred dog who is out of a bitch from the famous OBs line, by a Villestoftes dog. Zambia is out of a bitch by the 2006 European GQ Championship winner Niko Von Der Postschwaige and the Italian Del Vento line.

She is a confusing wee girl. I have never met a dog so calm at home, but off lead, she is vast.

Jim, your last setence is very interesting taking into consideration that I knew Spotty very well.

A litter sister to the Swedish grandsire mentioned above came second in the Nordic Pointer match a few weekends ago. The match happens between the Scandinavian countries, each fielding a team of dogs to compete. Sweden had a convincing teams win, with Top Point Axi coming second over all. I see a lot of Spotty in her - In fact that's one of my biggest discoveries so far, that even though you would have to go back 20 odd generations before you hit a common ancestor, there is remarkable similarities between her and the working dogs we have had here. Obviously just working pointer traits?

Due to high winds forecast for tomorrow, the Novice game trial has been postponed to Sunday.

A great days trialing today with a good turnout ! Thanks to the Jury bunch we were allowed to use a very nice venue a half hour or so from the Bombay Hills in some undulating tall pine country with had a bit of native , swamps and good cover .

Dogs came from as far away as below Tepuke and Rotorua and one of the judges making a 5 hour drive from down country to show fricken awesome commitment! You gotta love the judges that work the trials as they make such an effort for all competitors so that they can have a dog day out .
The day started out with all meeting at the Rangariri hotel to do the draw -almost quite English I thought as that is what you see them do except they're usually inside a around a fire and we in a starkly different way were at the closed patrons entrance of the pub -mind that may have been good thing as no big drinkers among us were exposed to early morning excess.
3 Braces went first and sadly I cannot report on those as they were soon out of view of the gallery whom were awaiting a call to bring the vehicles down to the next starting area .I was 4 and 5th brace which after walking a few hilly parts I was not thankful for that .Failte my young bitch from Ireland was up against a very hard running Irish Setter handled by Elena .Both dogs bolted off at a good gallop which was very pleasing and got into their work early .A little inexperience saw my young bitch lose me for a few moments but like the good girl she is she eventually reported in after a few whistles and a visit to the gallery looking for dad .We leashed our dogs after a while so to change sides of the gully which was separated by a marshy area .Off the dogs went again both in good control and checking in and covering the area well .Sadly by the end of our time we had not encountered birds but had also performed at a level that would pass both dogs through to the second round .
Next brace after a sweaty walk back and a very short rest was Ian Hendren's bitch Ivy up against myself and Inti -two beautiful examples of English Setters . Inti started a little slow but soon got into his stride quartering the ground and searching out credible areas as did Ivy whom is a much younger animal than my own but by her work pattern you could not tell .Ivy is an impressive running bitch with lots of speed , a good pattern and knows what to do when scent has been found . Point was called and Inti had it with Ivy pulling in a little way back honoring a perfect point by Inti .Truly a wonderful site to to see 2 pointing dogs doing the job perfectly .Bird away and a shot fired with good steadiness all round and both dogs through to the next brace .
As there was some good running but no birds for the other dogs there was a good number of dogs for the second round but again we lacked bird numbers so whilst the dogs showed their speed and running flare we did not get to see the all important bird work from many who could have performed.
What was really good was seeing a young all black GSP bred by RYAN in our ranks and also a Epagneul Breton being cared for by Elena .Very good to see other breeds other than setters and English Pointers having a go and with handling more than able to foot it with the Setters one thinks .
The wash up was Peter Gr taking most improved dog and handler -both ribbons and a comment from the a judge at how impressed he was with the way Peters dog ran and quartered and the winner El B with Inti . Whilst we had excellent work and very deserving of the place a little luck is always involved if you get or don't get a bird to work in your area .
Sadly today we had not the bird contact we would have liked but had a fantastic day as always with a great bunch of Doggers
