Outta sight of the judges and gallery whos to know what Brian might have done to that sheep?
Nothing new .... .
One of the liveliest – okay, let’s be honest and say super-heated – discussions you can find in the gun dog world is whether field trials or hunt tests produce the better hunting dogs. Speed, style, practicality, hunting instinct, finish work and a bird bag full of other elements fuel the debates. What’s important to most of us, however, is what program appeals to us and what we want out of our dogs. The best advice is to attend a couple of field trials or hunt tests, ask your dogs’ breeder for recommendations, and do a little local research to find out what’s available. Then grab your dog and have some fun
My own view is all the above will help your dog and are positive actions as you are focusing on achieving a result !!! Now in saying that Ive always thought of a test with out a comp as kinda like going to Karate and doing the katas to achieve your belts..wow you gota a black -you get there but havent actually fought in the ring under pressure which really shows the weaknesses as a white belt beats the shit out of you ...lol
Oh El B, get off your soapbox, for crying out loud...if someone has a gundog and shoots the odd rabbit or hare over them and the occasional pheasant and quail, and that person and their dog are happy with that, then that is how it is:...some of the most amazing work by sheep dogs I have witnessed working big country of mobs of 500 plus would make a sheep trial dog look like a whelp...
Question...how many dogs are actually involved in gundog trials and/or tests...what would be ball park figure for the percentage...it would be a very small, right? ...so there must be alot of dogs out there doing as their breed was intended to do with happy owners...for many, the proof of just how good their dog is, is in the oven...
PS...in my knowledge, gaining a black belt in karate or judo is not an easily gained title...and the scenerio of a white belt thrashing a black belt is somewhat unrealistic...
Soap box you say , Soap box !!!
hahaha I doubt this !!! I imagine most of those trialing sheep dogs are actually working the farm for a job too ..... You miss the point of the Karate EES , they go through a Kata routine which has skill in itself ....but at the end they dont have to compete to pass the belt and if they did the results would be wide and varied
if a man doesnt know much and due to that expects little by default then ignorance is bliss is it not
if all one is used to and knows is mediocre then ignorance is bliss .
Well, I know of two dogs who will never be trialed who have had more birds shot over them than you could wave a stick at...their work is incredible...
that person probably shoots chickens at Tegal.......
Wish the UKKW operated like that. My ten year old son beat the shit out of me in the kumete when I was going for my green.Quote:

someone has to be the protagonist here haha:D
yes a decent write up of the days happening would have been helpful to all Im sure !! I will do my best when competing to give reasonable report if I can remember the day .There are a few on here that could contribute to these reports ...their contribution would be appreciated .
The write ups that I do take time and effort and I cannot always give account of all dogs as I am concentrating on my own stuff or not seeing others run due to the terrain .I hope they are appreciated and give a little over view of our days out .
I will have uploaded a new video for tomorrow of some new grounds we will hopefully use next week in our trials if bird are thin toward Taupo.
We saw 27 birds yesterday , lots of rabbits and a shit load of stinging nettle .Beautiful grounds and the mixed game bag will test many dogs steadiness around fur !!! You will defiantly enjoy these new grounds we might use
Was it equine estate?
No and sorry but all details are have been suppressed by the secret intelligence service and some by the unintelligent service
Can't complain about that can we, where's the trials next week ?
18TH Will start at Taupo .I haven't been to the new ground they introduced myself but by all reports great running is to be had so lets hope we get a few chooks there to to make it exciting.
In the next few hours I should have a video up of another ground -a bit greener than Taupo
are you attending any of the trials Kawhia to take photos or do a report for the mag ?
Yeah will go down for a look, maya won the Auckland gsp rough shooters today.
fantastic!! Helen will be buzzing
The Pointer and Setter clubs potential new playground for live game trials next week. I shot this yesterday with a few of the clubs officials and some retired and non competing dogs

Great footage Brian and some superb work from the dogs. Hopefully the recent rain and a drop in temps will see birds produced wherever the trials are held. Any access to potential trailling venues will be much appreciated Im sure
nice to have options for sure .lets hope with the two property's we gets some birds under nose
It wasn't a write up, instead it was a polite way of saying that I won't write one...
Its a personal choice not to....I'm sure there will be a write up in the P&S Club Magazine... grab yourself a copy...
Thumps up on the new grounds... I can't recall a game trail in the past 4 years where 27 birds were seen on a single day...
Alot of people just read and follow the write ups here Petros -if they were all club member's I dont think I would bother to do a write up and post videos or photos as most would have been there on the day .
I hope that those that read the commentaries and see the videos and photos here enjoy what is on offer and it might motivate some to join us in our endeavors of working towards better working dogs , having a good day out with other like minded enthusiasts .
I hope we can by showing others imagery and commentaries that trialing is fun and not only for Setters and Pointers but also the continental breeds .
There is land we use which would suit them well and I know some of those dogs if worked would win titles !!!
Yes Petros this area will give us plenty of action I hope and certainly test the dogs .Its an exciting piece of ground and beautiful to boot .
The rabbits will see some exit quickly as they dart out of their hides in front of you and dog at speed . The ground is just a pleasure to hunt as you will see !! enjoy
Rain forecast through Friday and Saturday with strong winds -prepare for this !!! Also dont wear shorts at the new grounds if we go there as the stinging nettle will punish you and dog -carry antihistamines just in case it is needed --I went dressed as a ditch digger in the weekend and suffered the ill affects of fashion and stinging nettles lol
seems you found a ground that on page 45 you said couldn't be found brian in regards to a HPR trial.
Yes , this would be one of the few areas that could offer that opportunity !! I may bring that up at the AGM . In saying that our trials are in the off season so we cannot shoot and we share this ground with other people that would not be impressed with clubs turning up clearing the grounds midweek for them to hunt crumbs -the reality of NZ sadly to few opportunities .
Better the HPR join the pointer setter club and come bird dogging with us I reckon Kawhia
i can think of plenty of ground suitable including the fringe ground ground boardering the preserves.
on any normal spaniel live game trial bird numbers shot is less than half a dozen and thats with a full card of entries, ground game is as good as a gamebird by the way...
it's a shame the p/s format has not taken a leaf from the americans and adopted the johnny house and bobwhite trials....... shootable populations of birds can be established on virgin ground within a matter of weeks and legally shot after 30 days........ they would be like candy to the pointers and setters.
I LKE THAT IDEA with the johnny pens Kawhia and ones I will talk about at the AGM ..Pheasant when breed for an area can tend to move more so than quail that have call back pens -quail are wicked to hunt to !!
In time other options can be looked at im sure but for now its about bedding down securely what we have in the format we have it... I dont know that HPR guys wear tweed either ..a definite eliminating fault :o
Good on you El B for offering some of your personal shooting grounds for the trials, that's more than most would do. Well done
Cheers Pointer -I have found in life being able to share has great personal rewards - there is nothing better than seeing people who are heartly stuffed full of satisfaction and happiness by something you have contributed to .
Have you seen this one El B?

a lovely video !! what fantastic country
Please excuse masst the mustard spelling errors but cut and pasting from my iPad and haven't done a perfect spell check.
A short brief on the last two trials over the last two days .
The John Gaskin memorial Trial took place this Friday in the Taupo district on an area of land I had not been to called the 90s .An area dominated by Eucalyptus tree,s and low undulating hills covered in longish grass .
A Bird pen had been resurrected here last year and a population of pheasant had been left to wander the property for us to "find" if we could .
The first brace was two red dogs with Dale and Roche and Robyn and her dog Tonto. Roche a quick bitch had a flying start into what I would describe as dense tree-cover which isn't a lot of fun for handler or for that matter the judges who really cannot see what's happening .roche ran a bit long and didn't check in enough .A bird was away to the left nod although the judges couldn't see exactly what was happening the moving bell was telling the story .Tonto was a similar situation with not enough contact so both dogs were eliminated.
Second brace was English Setter Inti and Robyn's champ red dog Tanner good start for both dogs quartering the field well and hunting strong .With a tail wind the dogs pushed forward and then hunted back with INti on one cast missing me through the trees and going back toward the gallery before a whistle let him know where we're were .We move up the alley and all good until Inti punched to the left and went out of sight in the trees and went over a hill and off to never never land not to return for several minutes .Taner and on the other hand ran well worked the wind well and had great report and unlike Inti went through for the next round .
Third brace saw Dave red dog Billy and Rpbyns red dog Stella .This brace was dominated by shifting winds the judges commented so was not easy.Billy in General ran well and covered the ground well although did go behind Dave a few times but that could well have been the challenging wind conditions , with no birds Billy had done enough to proceed through. The comment was made by the judge Rob Merdith that this run by Stella made him smile so was the quality of the run .She hunted very well and hard through the native and only slowed in the longer heavier grass so Stella proceeded to the next round .As the second part of the trial was about to start the best bird of the date flew and landed about 20 metres in front of the gallery and strutted .
Second round Billy versus Tanner a really nice running brace and saw two dogs working together but sadly with no birds encounters .Cedderick versus Stella and again a good brace with Robyn commenting Stella ran ran her pants off
Cedderick versus Tanner and Billy versus Stella all in the final rounds and all had some good better than good running as commented to by the judges but again a lack of bird encounters saw a no result and with the most exciting bit of action was Dave falling face first over a log denting that pretty face .Tonight re we are sitting downing a couple of wines ,whiskey and beers complaining about the physicality of the day .It was a hard day out but great to be with passionate dog people and tomorrow we start again to find those elusive
Day two and it's a real wet one. The choice of cloths and foot wear is made and off we all head back to the 99 area.
First brace is Inti against Robyn's tonto. Both dogs cast off strong and proceed to work with gusto .Once again INti covers the ground well but pushed forward at speed and failed to check in enough without several whistle commands and for that he will not advance through .Tonto whilst covering growing also failed to give enough contact back to Robyn so didn't pass through either .
Robs Gordon Setter Banshee strides off and gets into his rhythm and has a good run but was cautioned to keep a bit more contact than he did on the day although he has done enough to proceed through to then next round .Barbs red dog Ruby set a good pace and had a polished run working the ground left to right and checking in on the way through ,other than having no bird contact had an exceptionally good run and through to the next round .
Dave Sheelys red dog Billy was next up against Morrys Gsp dog Charlie .Billy handled very well and kept in contact but had no birds , a very good searching run. Morrys started out we'll with his dog Charlie who is a big black handsome GSP who is a young dog with loads of go .Charlie worked well but did come back to the gallery a few times but did enough to go through .
Sorry lost my notes but at the end of the wrap up
Ruby and Ceddrick we last brace and whilst showed some birdyness it produced no birds and another day of no result .
We have decided to take a novice and a champ trial to the new ground at Rotorua and possibly one other novice if the next two days produce birds which they should .Its a real gut buster seeing what work has gone into the Taupo property only to have it not deliver the quality of bird encounter it should given the effort of Allen Jury to stock it for us .The most important thing all dogs need is birds as the bird make the the dog so we press onto new territory in our endeavours.
