Being on Point is a Military term.

I.e. the lead solider in a squad when on patrol is called the "Point".

Usually it's the "Point" who make first contact and is often the first casualty, Hence loosing his dog because he's on Point.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers
    Pete

Losing Pete, come on! "Loose" is something that isn't tight!

Talking about dogs on point, losing them etc...my friends were using locators on their dogs...I have watched youtube clips of dogs with these collars on and I had always thought that the noise from them would drive you bonkers:perhaps it is the frequency that the video cameras are picking up???...but no, the noise was not as obtrusive as I had imagined...I will stick to using the bells with the little Bretons...
