Any ideas to solve my problem.

Ok guys I have stuffed up. My fault completely but how are me and my mutt going to solve this. He is a deer dog dropout, started the blueprint then used it as a guide, but I did not socialize him with people as I dont really mix with people. No problem but he is very timid with strangers. Now the problem arose on visit to the vets for more jabs. After sitting quietly on the scales for a little while we went into the consulting room. As soon as the vet went to touch him big growl and bearing of teeth. She said she would put a mussel on but he was having non of that. She gave me the mussel and I slipped it on. I held him he struggled like a snake got his jabs but nothing else. You could see from her body language she (the vet) wasn't to pleased with our performance. I would like to sort my mates problem out as he /we found the whole process distressing. He is 16months old and generally well behaved, although does have the odd lapse .

have had dogs that were terrified of vets we fixed it by walking them to the vets regularly letting them have a sniff around weigh them and get some treats , establishing this wasnt just a place of pain but also where the good stuff is...... not an expert but it worked for us

"but I did not socialize him with people as I dont really mix with people. "

I mean this in a friendly manner - there's your problem...

Again, in a friendly tone - he looks to you as a pack leader, if every time, you encounter another person, he sees you avoid them, well, he's learnt that.

So socialisation is the answer, with you, being at ease and friendly too.

Yep that's exactly what to do to teach them the vets isn't just a place of poking and prodding. We are taking a couple of our new dogs to the vets for a 5 or 10min walk through with plenty of treats etc... more visits for a short time is better than a couple for a long time, since the dog will get the walking in and out fear/nervousness out of his system.
If you try using your high pitched exited voice when you see other people he will get the idea they are not something to be worried about. It also sounds a bit like he doesn't see you as the leader since if you tell him to do something he should do it. You will need to let him know that you will do the protecting of the "pack" and it's not his problem.

He just needs socializing, simple as that. I struggled with Bo also because I don't go out much and spend a shit tonne of time alone with just him and myself. He's a real one person dog, loyal to a fold but he had to actually be taught to accept others, even my wife!

well I must be a hard barstard.....my dogs do what I plurry well tell them....Ive taken dog to vet,it got grumpy so I did too. grabbed dog in way it had no option but to comply...hold bottom jaw and it cant bite.... slip your lead in half hitch over muzzle and hold it close...dog that cant open mouth cant close it on something...but yip you NEED to socialize dog...Meg is bad enough and has nipped afew folks...but not when Im in control.... I have zero issues with her at vets other than her nervious pee.... now Poppie on other hand...Ive gone completly different route...across my shoulders is her safe place.....she got monstered by big dog and poked her top fang through top lip...bled like stink, swelled up huge...we werent sure if broken jaw...vet gave her wee bits of jerky while giving antiinflamatory and antibiotic jab...oh man the labrador is strong in this one...jerky...jerky yummmy jerky...we took her back in 2 hours later when swelling had gone down.I walked in with Poppy across my shoulders, walked over to vet..she looked at me,looked at lip, gave it a wee tweak, and more jerky.......job done..Poppy thinks the vets is nice place...
maybe arrange with vet to bring your dog in and get treats just for a bit....the muzzles they had, cloth ones are worse than hopeless...if going to muzzle use a mesh cage like shepherds have when poison is about.... but the half hitch on leash works well if you hold it up by knot...it doesnt need to be really tight/painful...just enough to stop opening jaws...

Hey mate, as above I'd go to Raewyn Saville, in vegas. She's great, doesn't mince her words (would make some cry at least once a session). Anyway pm me if you want her details or a chat about how she operates. Cheers

Taking on a secondhand Mallinois is a HUGE task mate.
I have seen people that I know well and that have great dog skills, fail big time due to that breed not having an off switch
    Good luck

What is the dog like with you ? Can you hold it down on the floor, pull it's ears, tickle etc and have it not respond badly - the sort of stuff kids would do to a dog. No good having it accept adults but bite kids

my sons staffy was like this .however my old lab cross couldnt have given a stuff except when he persisted in removing staples from a suture line after huge bloody cancerous growth removal which returned and was fatal).I promptly used my restraining skills (taught in psychiatric nursing) and took control of his head .the bloody"you bastrd"look i got was a heartbreraker -not!!
Mr staffy on the othewr hand -he was having none of it -so a little dose of sleepy juice was required .poor bloody vets would ring "munter is ready "as you heard a very very drunk howling racket down the phone .had him in recently major dental extractions anaesthetic bowled him arse over elbow for 24hours .socialisation is rthe key and if in an unfamiliar environs rigid control .these two if we had them out where other dogs were were made to sit by our legs and not move which often saw other dogs approach but then sort of halt ??WTF...and other owners thank us.If in doubt too-on the lead -some now come with usual collarv or harness plus Micky ducks flash version muzzle control as well.

you cant ecspect the dog to be something different that what he learned from you.
muzzle on intrioduce him slowly to one or two then three or four when that becomes blase
then every tom dick and harry leave muzzle on till you see he,s relaxed and tails waggin with every new person

Q:? Can you take his food off of him 1/2 way through eatting?
I always trained mine to have this done to them any groweling and they where told thats a big NO NO. Vets is a tought one but the stuff above has covered that.
    Anyway just a thought.
I take it that he has never showed signs of this before?

What is the odd lapse? Cheers.
