Bedding wise, summer I don't worry much about mine, he spends most of his days and nights in the run rather than the box of the kennel unless its pissing down like it has been the last few days.
I have a padded mattress which I haven't removed from a while ago, I will remove it now because it doesn't do much good especially when I return from my daily walks and the dog is still wet/damp. I don't even remember why I placed it inside, thoughtless move.

Winter, pea straw is the cure! There is plenty of it in Bunnings, mitre10 or trademe. Throw in a generous amount inside the bedding area of the kennel.
I fill up the bedding area of my kennel about half way with loose pea straw, then dampen it down with my hands so the dog can actually get inside his sleep box. The first time you let the pup in, you'll hear a bit of rackas but eventually he'll make his den like he wants it to be.

You may find the dog will push the pea straw out of this bedding area into the run. Fine, push it back in. I did it for a while each morning when I found it outside on the run. Eventually the dog gave up and sleeps in it fine and happy.
Just keep an eye out on the pea straw regularly during winter if you put the dog to sleep slightly damp after your walks. It dries out fine during the day but the wet straw that gets stuck in the corners of your kennel won't get much air circulation to dry it out so you'll have to remove it before it starts rotting.

After you are done with it, it makes good additive for your strawberry compost, or if you have 100 pigeons around they take it so they can make their nests.

He gets a bit brisket every night, 5 minutes flat and its gone, by chew toys I mean antlers and kongs to keep him from destroying the kennel, Id exercise him before work but its too early and dont trust the missus to walk him.
