use barley straw not grass hay. Bales are available from Animal Feed Barn etc, Older dogs like a big sack stuffed with it as a mattress and tend not to destroy them, We use it loose with a board across the door of the kennel to keep as much in as possible....first frost the dogs wont come out of their straw nests in the morning
