    black labs

Hi I am thinking of getting a black lab after my jack Russell passed away on monday, is there anything I would need to look out for? I would be wanting to train it to retrieve ducks in the future.

Any advice or comments would be great.

    cheers

Maybe get intouch with your local gun dog club . You can get to see the breeders dogs in action . Hip desplacia ( spelling) used to be the thing to look out for . The test and score parents . Good luck

We had a black lab growing up. Dad named her 'Darkie' which always got strange looks when calling her in public.

She was a great dog, had no real medical problems but I've heard that Labs can be prone to hip dysplasia like Munsey said.
    Totally recommend pet insurance anyway.

Check that both parents come from good hunting stock and not from fat lazy yard dogs that only hunt the dinner bowl and postman

PRA,Its Hereditary. Means theyll go blind like mine has. And it starts right from a pup and gets worse untill they cant see nothing.

I'm not being one eyed , but also watch temperament ! . Have hunted with a couple of labs down here that are feral ! . Don't no if it's bad training or breeding or bit of both ? It's a huge burden to have a dog like that .

We have a black lab, she is of small stature on the lean side (on account of no getting scraps and living off all she needs) has a great temp, have a feeling we gunna have prob with hips but as long as weight stays off she will be fine. She is now relagted to home dog as i have a vizsla although come opening morning she will have all sorts of spasams as i will take her for a duck. Would i get another.... yes and train her as i have the vizsla. Craigc can vouch for her temp infact his brother wants to keep her lol

I say go for it but take your time and dont rush in. I think we rushed in and lucked out with her
