Thread: Car sick pup

My vizsla x pup is coming up 17 months and has started being car sick. He's been fine up until about a month ago but now if the drive in longer than 30-40 minutes he throws up.
He's been on a raw food diet since i got him and that hasnt changed.
I have side windows open so theres plenty of air flow in the canopy.
I'm at a loss for why it has started now, he's travelled heaps before with no issues.
Any advice on how to stop it would be much appreciated.

You have 2 options if you have a ute.

1. Put her in the back of the ute in a dog crate put blanet over crate so she cant see out.

2. Put her in the back seat cover side windows so she has to see out of front window. Or just do the crate in the back seat.


Most animals and humans get car sick not from the motion but looking out of the side windows.

Also try not to feed them too much/anything before the trip and see if it helps.

try getting some dried hooves from raw essentials for her to chew - will keep her focused on that during the trip - they last a while. My boy travels with me a bit over 1/2 hour morning and night to work - chews keep him occupied and well behaved in the back seat.
Our boy loves the dried deer ears but they don't last more than about two trips, lambs ears only minutes

I get motion sickness, more so now as I suffer from vertigo which is an inner ear problem, maybe your dog has an inner ear problem...try feeding it ginger before and during travelling, works for me...I use the crystalized ginger to chew on....how to feed it to your dog is your challenge....the doctor prescribes me Metoclopramide for nausea, ask your vet if that would work on a dog.

I've got a foxy/jack russel maniac that got carsick quite a bit as a pup.

Made him a "booster seat" for the work van, so he could sit higher and see out. Seemed to do the trick. He seems to have grown out of it as he got older. Quite happy to sit on the back seat in the ute now, but still likes looking out the window.

One of the signs he was about to upchuck when he was young was that he would start drooling...

It sounds like he might be getting a bit overexcited. I had a dog that did that for a while too. The trick is to de-escalate the hype as it's building. Does he keep throwing up or is it just a 1 time hurl then ok ? my girl would build up then spew then she was ok for the rest of the trip. I started not feeding her before a long trip for a while, but then she stopped doing it after a while so didn't need to worry.
