Yes, I have shot a lot of deer over my life time and trained a hell of a lot of dogs for it too. Anyone that thinks I don't have experience as a deer hunter is wrong. Granted I haven't gone on a serious deer stalk in 10 years or so, but in the early 90's living on Poronui and working for Heli-SIka I could go for a hunt after work from my house. I also hunted all over the CNI.
Having worked with dogs for most all hunting disciplines, I reiterate, training a deer dog, if done properly, is the easiest of them all.

If my last dog is anything to go by and having just had the most basic of control training delivered by myself. (Not a dog trainers asshole)

I would have to agree. He worked on deer well enough for me to turn a profit.
It just took me a while to trust what he was telling me.

You're onto it... They don't lie... we just often don't understand.

They do lie... My lab constantly tells me she is starving and I need to feed her right now before she dies of mal-nourishment. She is perfectly well fed and in good condition.

You completely reinforce my intention. You misunderstood, she is not claiming to be starving she is simply reinforcing her inalienable right as a Labrador to demand food whenever she wants to eat, which is always. I'm the same with booze, I am not trying to convince the barman I am thirsty, but simply to "keep that shit coming"!

The more I think about this, the more similar it is... both end up with a "I want more" --- "I think you've had enough" scenario!

I have a similar relationship with my local rum peddler.

@sometimes has a couple of GWP's that seem to work out okay for him. He might be able to give you a steer on how he trained them. I used to breed Alaskan Malamutes in Victoria and they used to indicate for me on just about anything that breathed. But they had no sense with snakes. Had my male dog to the vet 3 times with snake bites. The vet reckoned we'd be able to draw anti-venene off him if he got any more. And I had to fight him for possession if I shot anything - bastard dog. Point is, just about any dog will do it - apart from Sydney Silkies, and suchlike.

Broke all my own rules a couple of days ago, took 2 dogs on a pig hunt which because of the sign became a deer hunt. Both these dogs will indicate on deer and have been used but only one on one. First indication was good, sneaked in but the breeze got the better of us.
Second time went in on a good sized stag, when everything became too much for the young dog which broke and chased. Got her back 4 hours later, so back to square one with her.
