Question Do your hunting dogs sleep inside?

So. We currently have a pet dog that is kept outside with free run of the property during the day and sleeps in the lounge at night. Husband wants a pig dog. He insists that pig dogs always sleep outside and the idea of letting a dog trained to hunt being allowed in the house is ridiculous.

I get he and I have to negotiate this out. But does no one let their pig dog in the house? For the purpose of this discussion bird dogs don't count (less agressive sport in my opinion)

i prefered my pigdogs to be treated as working dogs, while they could spend some time with the family, laying around the back door, i liked them to have a routine to keep them fit and healthy so they got on with the job, the line between pet dog and pig dog gets blurred pretty easily and the result is just another potlicker once they end up on the sofa.

The dog will only care if it knows the difference.
Leave it outside with a decent kennel and run (not that i can talk).

Welcome A&T. Keep the pig dog outside. Think of it not as a pet but as a tool to be used in harvesting food.

For Christ's sake don't tell him he was right. No man knows how to handle that statement coming from a woman. He will automatically think he has done something wrong.

They are fine inside, but not at the start.

Most night's I have one about, good bit of company and I think the one on one is good for them. The young pups really like it, but they don't stay the whole night inside. Through the day depending on where I am of course, it's nothing to having the whole team wandering in and out.

Mines always outside. But I will let her into a hut if Im the only one there.

Although I have never had my dogs inside, if it doesn’t bother you I don’t see it as being a major. Wirehunt makes a good point, having them around and in and out a bit is not going to hurt. Its not like it will turn them gay or something. I can’t see how a bit of attention or sleeping inside will turn them into “pot lickers”. Look at Police dogs, they are fully integrated into the family and I would rather you than me tell one of them it’s gay

Its just the hygiene aspects that have stopped me having a dog inside really.

Husband is getting over the cleanliness issue. Farming/hunter family. They don't *get* allowing dogs in the house. Scarlett (the pet) is the ONLY dog pet in the extended family.

He vaccums once a week, I do a light vacuum halfway through the week. Dog gets perfumed and brushed several times a week and I spray down her bedding with special pet spray. The sissification of the dog *probably* won't be just the dog being allowed in.
