    Doberman bailer

    Hi guys,

I have an entire Doberman, he is almost 3yo,
Really good dog, very pleasant mannered and a great guard dog,
He enjoys coming hunting, we have shot goats at long distance and it’s been fine, he is not gun shy.
The other day he took off after a goat and bailed it up, and he had it bailed up for about 3minutes until I was able to get down to where he was and shoot it.
To be honest I was impressed, but I’m not too sure on whether I should encourage this behaviour or not?
I don’t want him taking off from me into thick gorse chasing goats.
But i must admit it was good when he had it bailed up for me as it had been a long day in the sun looking for them.
Is it possible to train him to become an indicator dog or am I best to put a tracking collar on him and just go for it?
all advice would be greatly appreciated thanks!

It’s not an Edison moment having a dog bail a goat. I’d be putting the collar on him and keeping him close.

you must have command and most importantly good command when the dog is excited or worked up - to bolt off and bail a goat is not good - what next - the dog needs a stop - or you have a bailer with no commands

agree its not hard to get a dog to bail a goat..far better than grabbing it and making it scream...once they learn that trick its hard to stop them wanting to do it again, without collar etc
dobies are VERY intelligent, its why not seen so much as guard dogs anymore..they know will get hurt so will stay back Vs stuff it I want a chew of rottie/shepherd etc
when you have your big 3 commands rock solid...work on the rest. dog is showing potential..up to you to fine tune it.
a dog who bails goats up trees is a very handy companion indeed, our heading dog learnt where good trees were for doing it and would shepherd goats towards it.... made them easy to catch .

Put him through the Deer Dog blueprint. No need for a GPS collar
