Thread: Dog access through farm land

Hey guys. My boys not ready to hunt yet but I'm keen to get him out on some over night missions. I'm just wandering what's the general rule of thumb for accessing public land through farm land with a dog? Contact the farmer first was my thinking?

I keep mine leashed while on private land

yes.leashed is best....and dose them up with worm tablets on regular basis...dont want hydatids to be an issue.
definately front foot it and approach farmer.

Contact landowner definitely. Tell him/show him the dog has been dosed and you will pick up all dog poo it does on his land and as FF says on a lead. I would also be saying to the landowner your dog is stock proof and ask does he want a demo ?

this is the way I have always gone about things.

Please do get in touch with the landowner. Anyone found walking their dog on my farm would be trespassed off the place, it's just rude.

I think Te tui track is still no dog.just if you were thinking of going there.

I think best with dog access over private land when accessing Public land is to always ask first......not when you are actually there dog in tow. I always have my dog(s) on lead (unless the landowner says otherwise and usually still on leads even if he says off leash is OK ) dosed well before and carry evidence from the vet of the same. I have not had an issue.

call into the farm house and give them a heads up, you may find ya get the go ahead to walk in anytime without checking in, if its a paper road they will have a history of idiots walking across it to get to the public land but even if you get a frosty welcome be polite most of the farmers i deal with come round over time and you form some good friendships..... use your head though and find somewhere else with lambing coming up

Hi @mikee I treat my pup myself every 3 months with a chewable tablet I get from the vets. Is there something more I should be doing or getting the vet to do specifically for hydatids?

Nope but i get the vet nurse to dose the pup then sign as such on reciept. I used to take people at their word but this has been proven to be foolish so i dont expect anyone else to just take my word my pup has been dosed.......

Check the packet as some of the chewable ones dont cover tape worms which is what some farmers are worried about for sheep measles.

I've had different responses but always ask.
Accessing DOC land across a farm I have been asked for sheep measles.
On another property I shoot bush fringes they want to know he is cattle, sheep and lamb proof.
I have never had the opportunity to mix him with lambs so have not taken him.
But at least they are prepared to accept dogs outside of lambing.
Hunting on Fish and Game Land I don't recall ever being asked.

@ZQLewis back when we lived in Timaru we used to walk dog around block and go past a couple of paddocks of lambs,if dog looked at them he got thick ear...gently like...after a couple of sessions they wouldnt even look at them...which was fine and dandy untill we went somewhere with pet lambs who ran over to greet us...poor dog was turning himself inside out to get away from lambs and not look at them.... have gone opposite way with current dog..she knows what sheep are,and they not to be chased unless I specifically tell her to....
