Thread: Dog coat, what's everyone using?

GWP' have a double coat of hair. No issues.

@Woody Apologies, I tarred WHP pointer by accident there. By pointer (vizsla, gsp, Weimaraner) have single coats so will feel the cold. WHP are bigger bodied also which help with heat retention.

I've also seen bird hunters usong dog coats on their dogs in water. Personally, I even remove collar from my dogs as any coat or collar cluld easily cause entrapment and drowning of dog amongst vegetation and snags; also restricting the dogs swimming efficiency. Sa.e when bush hunting. Coays or swanni or gunny sack can be good value in camp though.

yeah mate..I hear you on the tanglement bit...Im very wary when they have neopreme coat on..but flip side of them is the added bouyancy so the swim flat..the arse end sits higher in water...bit of peace of mind on big lake when they turn off ears and go after a fast swimmer out into the deep...takes a while to run and get boat from around shoreline far away...

Been using these for quite a few years now, custom fit to dog, heavy duty canvas outer and woolen blanket inner with good grunty velcro strap. Rate them.

They look good. Going to try them. Got 2 Enghlsih pointers but the younger dog last year shredded an expensive coat we got for him. Seemed to really hate it but they were warm as toast under the jackets in the cold morning.

Had one of those oil skin jackets for my JR lasted only one trip into southern ruahines after she disappeared into a tight scrubby leatherwood patch and eventually emerged sans the jacket

Cheers for the input guys. Think I'll try a Swazi one for hunting and pack something seperate for night/ kenneling.

I wonder about animal fabric coats. If left to their own devices, what does nature do?
Vislas come from Hungary don't they? Weimaraner from Germany... not exactly tropical during winter months.
If their end of working life had been short they would have bred a different dog.
As for protective fabrics for such as pig hunting or pushing through matagouri and blackberry that's a different issue. Yes provide them with protection..
If you're Visla etc shivers in the Mai Mai or while you sit on a hill, the obvious answer is you have the wrong dog for the task. They are meant to be high energy, on the move critters.
