we picked up two of them $5 each from op shop...dogs love them.
nothing beats neopreme for keeping them warm..but those oilskin fleece lined jobbies that are often seen of poofy town pooches do look the shit.
you can always make your own..or get one made if you have better idea on what will work for you..my dogs get too hot most of the time so its seldom they wear anything at all. I have been known to chuck my fleece Tshirt on cold wet dog over opening weekend so they sleep and stop shivering...
I got one of these. Seems ok. Bella likes it and good fit.

Been using these for quite a few years now, custom fit to dog, heavy duty canvas outer and woolen blanket inner with good grunty velcro strap. Rate them.
The swazi ones are good for in the bush, the don't seem to chafe.

just brought one of these https://shop.farmlands.co.nz/outback...59.p?back=true. Got rid off front clip and stitched it up instead. Well made but wouldn't hunt my dog in it.
Excellent for keeping dog warm when sitting around or in the hut or kennel
Swanndri for kennel at night.
If your Weimarana is anything like my Viz you will struggle to keep him warm. I have a stoney creek jacket for normal three season hunts plus a swazi for when it's wet or windy. If it's at all cold he sleeps under my puffer jacket or he is restless all night.
Sitting around glassing in the cold is still an issue even with two jackets on so looking at getting him a dog puffer jacket.
We are actually going to do a trial on some dog coats and bedding this Winter for a NZ company who makes the stuff. We will be putting accelerometers on the dogs and measuring how much more or less sleeping they do over night. Use of coats and good bedding should mean less food bills for owners of working dogs over Winter and also result in more content dogs.
I’ve had a weather beta from pgg for a long time. Has been on a number of dogs at night in the kennel and has lasted really well. Don’t think it would be much use wearing out an about
My vizsla doesn't hunt in a coat (North Island hunting). But at night (at home as well in winter) I use a Swandri (blue checkered Jacket) and was using a puffer vest as well for sleeping. Because pointing dogs have a single coat, they feel the cold. I've done the maths, and turns out I've started packing a second quilt (600g) for night in the tent and no jackets). Provides the warm he needs when he needs it.
GWP' have a double coat of hair. No issues.
@Woody Apologies, I tarred WHP pointer by accident there. By pointer (vizsla, gsp, Weimaraner) have single coats so will feel the cold. WHP are bigger bodied also which help with heat retention.
I've also seen bird hunters usong dog coats on their dogs in water. Personally, I even remove collar from my dogs as any coat or collar cluld easily cause entrapment and drowning of dog amongst vegetation and snags; also restricting the dogs swimming efficiency. Sa.e when bush hunting. Coays or swanni or gunny sack can be good value in camp though.
yeah mate..I hear you on the tanglement bit...Im very wary when they have neopreme coat on..but flip side of them is the added bouyancy so the swim flat..the arse end sits higher in water...bit of peace of mind on big lake when they turn off ears and go after a fast swimmer out into the deep...takes a while to run and get boat from around shoreline far away...
Had one of those oil skin jackets for my JR lasted only one trip into southern ruahines after she disappeared into a tight scrubby leatherwood patch and eventually emerged sans the jacket:XD:
Cheers for the input guys. Think I'll try a Swazi one for hunting and pack something seperate for night/ kenneling.
I used a st bernard very warm and fits me well
I wonder about animal fabric coats. If left to their own devices, what does nature do?
Vislas come from Hungary don't they? Weimaraner from Germany... not exactly tropical during winter months.
If their end of working life had been short they would have bred a different dog.
As for protective fabrics for such as pig hunting or pushing through matagouri and blackberry that's a different issue. Yes provide them with protection..
If you're Visla etc shivers in the Mai Mai or while you sit on a hill, the obvious answer is you have the wrong dog for the task. They are meant to be high energy, on the move critters.
