The Manawatu river gets a bit of algae in Summer too but usually during low flow and high heat. I used to take my Rotties to the river in Summer but somehow always got lucky since back then I didn't even know algae was a thing in rivers. I only take my dogs to the beach these days, but then that's not too far away

Took my dogs to the beach at Awatoto a couple of years back. Ran along beach and into surf. Great. Next day the dogs were covered in ticks. Out with the Ripcord. Never taken them back.
