dogs in areas not supposed to be

hi, not sure where this goes, but I was on a trip and met some hunters who had a deer dog with them in a DOC block which has Kiwi's (we heard them!) and it also states in the block information online that no dogs are allowed.

Is this wise? Should I do anything about it?

Scottrods if the hunters concerned have put their dogs through Kiwi aversion training then they could have been given permission to have them there as the dogs will have proven that they will not interfere with Kiwi.

It's wise if they have it under control. No.

Did you get their number plate? As above, avian aversion cert means you can go to some places. Good on you for being concerned. I'd ring up your local DOC ranger and give them some details. It's up to DOC to decide if they want to chase it up.

The DOC areas that i hunt for upland are "no dogs allowed" but the permits we get thru F&G allow dogs for the duration of the gamebird season

Check the regs for that block, as Rushy says they may be allowed there with a kiwi aversion cert.

Probably not much you can do about it now

Not aware of kiwi certification for dogs in south island . Thought it was North island only . I would be interested if there is a test in the south i can do with mine ? .I believe a well trained deer dog would be less of a risk to native birds than doc and there green rain ! .

Think the Kaimai has kiwi & I'm able to take my dog.He has been Kiwi safe certified though.
Would need to have a look at their permit, to see if the dog is included on it.

Jetski came up through a kiwi area with us today, regs are just on lead at all time. No problemo.

You can also get a permit for areas of Fiordland, but there is only ever six permits. Unless you say you are going to back valley to hunt pigs, then your good to go.
I was number 40 on the list around 5-6 years ago for taking a deer dog in.

Hmm. Block info simply says "No dogs allowed".

Pretty much truly annoys me this stuff...dogs in the company of the then FS and DOC personnel have probably accounted for more kiwi and blue duck than other predators...

Then add their 1080 to it and ask them how many protected birds they have killed which is a surprising number.
