Hi, I have a 3 year old GWP bitch, she is really hairy, and tends to get matted fur on her legs, under her jaw and sometimes around her tail, anyone else have any issues like this? I have trimmed her legs before but I worry I will make it worse,
Any advice appreciated

Just keep clipping the surplus as nescesarry. You dont need to be heavy handed about it, just a little as required.

You might find “stripping” helps as well. Basically hold the hair with your fingers and pull. This pulls out extra hair and will also make the coat coarser.

not a GWP but nugget was a cocker spaniel..we bought a set of clippers,he got total shave each spring,and again late summer,just a head n hock job mid winter and we had ZERO issues from then on...no ear issues which are common.... the matting like dreadlocks is not good at all...

You may not have a coat that can not be stripped, however waiting until it moults will be your only time to reduce it. They should have a double coat but many gwp have a griffon coat that is similar to what you have going by the photo.. clipping round the head and a bit of dag is all you can do.
Do not shave your dog, what ever outer coat you have will never grow back, particularly for spaniels.

If I had a hairy tart I would just use the clippers around eyes, ears and bung hole to stop hair getting in the eyes and crap in the hair.

You can buy stripping combs for dog grooming. Basically a comb with a blade on it. O a deshedding brush heaps of dog grooming vids on YouTube.

well.......if the mum was 50% GWP 50% lab and the Dad was 50% GWP 50% border collie I guess that makes pup 50% GWP ...so Im now half way to owning one LOL
