Thread: Home made oilskin dog jacket.

So trying to find a dog jacket that fit was one thing, trying to find one that wasn't pink and water proof is another. I had been looking for a while to find one that I felt would suit my dog and his needs. Some I came across were too big with extra stuff that I didn't want, while some had too big a price tag. So I ended up getting an old oilskin jacket and cutting it to bits. Some camo fleece from spotlight and with help from the wife on the sewing machine, we made a reversable fitted dog jacket. Only one I've made but would have to say was really fun. Total cost was $20 for fabric and Velcro and a few hours later it's a finished product. If anyone has a old swanndri I wouldnt mind making one out of that too. Thought you guy would like this.

Very nice jacket, are you planning on hunting the dog in the jacket?? Or is it a night time thing when out hunting

He will be wearing it hunting if it's cold or if it's wet. I will put some water proofing on it. I was thinking of pockets but thought he would catch them on bushes, it was a lot easier then I thought it would be and worked out cheap as chips.

I just grabbed a roll of fleece for the exact same purpose (from Spotlight too).
A mates girlfriend offered to try and run up a coat for my hound, but once she saw the fabric, she advised against using it as she reckons it wont stand up to bush use.

@Pengy I would think it would be ok as it seems just like a bush shirt you get from stony creek or huntech etc. but I did notice the oilskin fabric was a little harder also sells on trademe for $35 a meter. But a weatherd old jacket that's been waxed a few times could be harder wearing too.

I have an oilskin type coat for her, but it is a bit too big so no good when hunting. I may just buy one the stoney creek hi viz dog coats. Not bad at $50

@Pengy yeah that's the problem I had trying to get something to fit him well enough not the get stuck on stuff. But now I wish I had seen the stony creek one haha.

Can just imagine out for Walkie's one dog in a swannie the other in an oil skin!! Would get some looks

@P38 cheers. He's a farm breed heading dog. I do a bit of work for a local farmer and got offer one of his pups a few years back. His father was a top trails dog but was Tri colour don't know how this ginger mess was made but he is great on finding deer and loves him self a good steer down with the sheep.

I personally dont hunt my skinny runt in any kind of jacket, i save that for the after match so she has a warm nights sleep, she even gets the Swazi jacket over top of her for extra warmth (also warm for me to put on in morning), Have seen dogs out in the bush in those neoprene duck vests. Dogs are bred for outside, If you are moving then you are warm, Same as the dog. I can hear you all say now that im not naked (and trust me not something you want to see) but they have fur for a reason.

Only my 21 cents and my dog is happy, When she is cold she cuddles up to me which is my que to keep moving.

@HNTMAD yeah hear ya. I did notice him get cold a bit out on the tops and when glassing so same as your idea, it will stay in my bag till it's needed. But he isn't getting my own jacket at night. I'll get him a blanky

to be fair she gets an old ridgeline, but swazi sounded better lol
