I would like a dog too!

Hi I have been umming and arrrring about getting a pooch for a while now and the Mrs has given me the all clear.
Well she asked if we could buy one of our mates Staffies for $800 but I said nay! So I guess this means she wants one so im going to put out some tenticles.

Im after a deer dog that would need to be good with kids.
Anyone in the BOP/NI got any going at the mo?
Have been looking into a Header but am open to suggestions and guess the price needs to be right. Dont want a pedigree Visla or anything for my first dog.

    All help appreciated.

hey, i got 2 dogs as pups from a pig hunter for a box of beer, ones so gunshy its not funny (hides under the car when the gun comes out) but the other is awsome for goats (i dont use them 4 pigs).
as far as breed goes theres are a bit of everything, mums a pointer dalmation cross and the dad was some kelpi, greyhound, bully something or other.
they look like slim labs, great with the kids, and have a really good hunting instinct, a good nose, they retreive too (the mum was hunted with the pups in her belly so the instinct of the hunt can go to the pups, which is why i reackon pig dog pups can make good hunting dogs)
have a look on trade me under free/cheap pups, (alot of overlooked dogs alot of good deals there thatd make a good pet/hunting dog, but i rekon if they have some lab or pointer in them that makes all the difference (i worked with a guy whos pitty would bring in the cows like a collie, so i guess it can depend alot on the dog).
    hope that helps
next breed i want to try would be something with a bit of ridgeback or weimaraner, im not that keen on purebreeds, i like a good cross section in there

get anything other than a chinese crested and it'll probably end up as good as you train it.
Depends if you want a companion or a fair dinkum hunter. If its the former just grab whats gets your fancy, if it's the latter there are a fair few blokes on here who breed just look through the deer dog threads and you'll find something good.

I got way too caught up in it to the point of stress (was fucking stupid) in the end the compromise was with the missus not with the best hunter breed. I settled on the idea that itll be as good as the effort I put into it so we'll just wait and see.

Hit up the SPCA - you might be plesantly surprised

IMHO you'll get just as good a 'compromise' dog (hunting and smoocher for the missus) as you would from your every day back yard breeder and you'll be saving a life in the process and helping the cause to put backyard breeders out of business and encourage speying and neutering.

There have been a lot of awesome dogs I wish I could have taken in from the Turangi no-kill shelter. Like working dogs. I'm a little heart broken over one in particular at the moment. He would have been an awesome deer dog and mate to my companion dog but sadly is still bouncing around looking for a perminant home (I am unable to have two dogs at this rental property)
Pointer, Fly on the Wall and SiB like this.
She loves the free fresh wind in her hair; Life without care. She's broke but it's oke; that's why the lady is a tramp.

Thanks for the advise guys all very helpful.
I like the sound of that Dougie. Save a poor soul and who knows it may be a star.
If not i'll blame my training and get better at it then get a specialist perhaps?

Nah you're all good, mate. I put it up there for anyone, I knew Mum wouldn't have it. Plus I'm probably not ready for a dog just yet. If it works out, I'll be glad to see it go to a forum member and I'll look forward to seeing it in action sometime.

Maybe so but even though I have a lab I would suggest perhaps a Wire hair would be a better choice for a deer dog.Have hunted with guys that had Wire hairs & GSP, but depends on how they're trained too I guess .

    Spoken like a true townie.
I've got two dogs here that I would be breeding from except some fuckwit got them cut. Hard to carry on a good line when that happens.
