Dougie I think its an interesting statement you make, and for the best part, true. Vets suggest speying and neutering as par for the course and for the best part, it's a good idea for most of the things they see in thier clinics. Keeps everyone in business (including themselves) and shelter animal numbers down too. However, suggesting it's "Mr. and Mrs. Benefit" is strange. I used to live next to a weathy elderly neighbour, whose unkempt, mange-ridden Corgi (yes yeally) sired half the towns unexplained litters! Eventually he was forced to be fixed after dog control caught up with her!
I think the real problem is management. I know I would rather put a dog down the hole myself than make an unwanted dog someone elses problem by giving it to a shelter. If more people thought about that, perhaps they would adjust their way of seeing speying, or even dog ownership on the whole? If they aren't prepared to find a solution to their dog, then perhaps they should think about if they are prepared to own one at all?
The reason I agree with you suggesting Gibo look in the pound for a pup is simple. One, deer work isn't very complex, find a pup with the right temperament (read slow, biddable) and your probably half way there. Two, he has stated he can't justify a HPR breed like Chris suggested as the job description for this dog is a very short list. Thirdly, it sounds like it will be a family pet first and foremost, which I'm sure you will find in the poundGood luck Gibo, make sure you post pics!
