I can only go off the one here, so it might not be standard. But they move very fast even when on game.
What would be some of your picks for an indicating dog
I have been thinking of heading this way in the future
One option for me that i have been mulling over is crossing my little bitch with a gsp up the road
She hunts pigs, but does indicate, works close in etc
I have seen the gsp crossed over his eye dog, unplanned, but saw one of the pups the other day and wow what cross that is, some have gone for SAR
I have a brittany here, way down the list for a deer dog. Upland shooters dream though
You are going to have this dog for at least 10 yrs so chose wiely. Me i'm biased on wire haired pointers, not everyone's cuo of tea . I'm now on my 3rd and luv this versatile breed.
My mate just got a new pup - registered as a 'lab cross' - man she looks striaght out of a wire hair pointer book. Super smart...and leggy. At just 4months she is level with Jet and her house mate Huntaway x Heading bitch.
Did those people with the GSP ever get back to you, Gibo?
What's your little bitch moonhunt?
This wee girl, about 22-23kg, too many breeds in her make up, cattle cross keeps it easy
I wounder now to looking back at her late mother there could have been some watered down pointer of some sort in there too

How is she as a hunter/ If good then do it. You've got nothing to lose.
Slow starter, great nose, more of a bailer, no vices

Dog three is a viszla-beagle cross. Not far from where you live, you should go have a look. Could be a good cross, could have an epic nose and be a bit more mellow (than a pedigree viszla).
My neighbour and good friend has the same cross. He is hard working (very motivated) but still quite the handful. He works well if you know how to work him... I would not suggest him as a first time dog owner's project. That's just Wolly though! ;) He's 2 years old, still very much a puppy/nutjob ADD!
Mrs is keen to go for a look so will see what kind of temperament shes got. Keep ya posted...
That sounds like a real interesting cross.
I wouldn't take anything with a beagle cross. I've never met a good beagle for starters, then think how the hound breeds and in patricular the beagle, operate. At full noise, in a pack, independently of the handler. Not deer dog material
I like having a bit of Beagle in there :D The ones I've got don't do the yodeling and have bloody good noses.
Cause it will be worked tight for the job in hand I can't see it being a problem.
Hmmm, sounds like a lottery at best. I'd be more inclined to grease up to moonhunt if he puts his bitch to a nice slow and steady german
Plan is look at available pooches in the Bay monday morn and then go for a look.
Chips is still available at Rotorua. Pointer bully x maybe more suited???

Cheers guys cant garuntee it'l be good at hunting but can garuntee it will be happy.
First dog owner but grew up with dogs. Dad had 3 GSP's and a Waimarana and then we had a bully staffy x that was more mine. Taught him how to eat foxies on his turf, climb the walnut tree and sadly he died swimming in the river in Waimana.
Eat foxies... lol
Did your old man use the GSPs and the weimaraner as gundogs or pets?

So what breed of dog did you get Gibo? I am looking around now too and I see Viszla seem to be the hot favourite. What did you find?
