Just where does the responsibility end???

Some weeks ago, a man rang to ask me if I would know of anyone who could take ownership of his Brittany (not an Epagneul Breton) as due to his change in circumstances he could no longer keep the dog...a female adult. He had rung the breeder with no help being solicited...I rang around the likely people I know who may have been able to help but to no avail, which I duly advised him of...he was most appreciative of our considerations.

Where does it start and finish for the breeder in an instance such as this...how far does the responsibility go...? Knowing that the family lived on a section property, should have the breeder sold him the dog in the first place?

PS I have no personal interest in this dog...I was however, concerned that the breeder showed such indifference to the matter.

Why? because these little dogs are high energy and really active.
oh please do not get me wrong...I am not saying a person living in town on a small section should not have a dog...hell, no!!

Its the change in circumstances that means if can't keep it tho right? So section or station is irrelevant

Not being or ever wanting to be a breeder EesBees because of all the after problems that go with it.
I sympathise with the owner , if indeed he is genuine and not one that just cannot handle or simply doesn't want the dog anymore.He has done the correct thing by contacting someone who cares.

Breeders, especially of hunting dogs, in my opinion, have at least a minimin responsiblility of ensuring, to the geniune best of their knowledge that the pup they sell goes to the sort of home they wish it to go to. notice I said to the "best of their knowledge".
An offer to rehome a pup that has grown into a dog, should be discussed at the point of sale , if indeed the breeder offers such a guarentee.

I personally do not feel that a breeder has to take responsibility for that pup, which is now a dog unless such an agreement was made.
I think a responsible breeder "could" offer to take the dog back and impress on the owner that any costs incurred be the responsibility of that owner, this maybe cost's that entail having the dog put down, as a last resort if nothing else can be done, due to inept handling/upbringing by the owner, or other factors.

So, in my opinion a breeder should do everything possible to ensure the dog is rehoused,but, this does not mean taking the dog back if the breeder does not wish to or can't.
Also the breeder should not be responsible for any costs incurred in the rehoming or otherwise of one of his pups, so long as all care was taken with the selection of owmer before the sale

Dogs get sold, swapped, run over, and put down every day, how can any breeder foresee these things?

I would take back any of the pups I sold at any time.

Not selling to people on a section would be a bit hypocritical as I lived on a section when I got Quin.

Send it down here EB, I'll take any dog that has the lineage. Namely a good hunting instinct, not gun shy and doesn't fight. In fact the first isn't important, time will tell on that one.

The breeders responsibility ends at the gate, HOWEVER, it's just good PR, or a good way to get a good or even great name for yourself with the after sales service. Same goes for anything you sell.

Sorry, Wirehunt, I know nothing more of the dog except what the guy told me...

People should do whatever they are capable of doing.... beyond that is unrealistic... I am certain no one wants to see this dog anywhere but in a happy hunting home... I have seen instances of dogs being put down for reasons of nothing more than their owners ego many times over the years, some instances even more recently.... let's categorize this properly, we're dealing with dogs, not starving children in Africa.
