Hi everyone.
I'm starting to get into pig hunting as I can pig hunt more regularly then deer hunt.
Just a couple questions...
Can you hunt pigs with 1 pig dog ? what's the best breed of pig dog? And does anyone have puppys for sale? Cheers.

You can successfully hunt pigs with one dog. I did for years. But I was working in the bush then. The dog was pretty experienced when I got him. He was a working Collie
Maybe you need to run a pup with a pack for the experience at the beginning. The labs I have had have been able to handle a medium sized pig by themselves.
My best mate was very successful for years with one dog, he has a couple of young dogs from him now also.

One dog can be the very best. ('Beware the man with one dog'), my late grandfathers words, Les Knight, with respect to dog trialling. It's true with dogs in general as is my experience with pig dogs.
I run three as if I have some bad luck i am not loosing everything and I don't need to start from the beginning.
Do you want a bitch or a dog pup or a half age dog to begin with?
I may be able to help, where are you based?
The best pig dog is one that stops pigs. I have had out standing stopping dogs from Border collies, kelpie, boxer x, Labs. Yes one dog can find and keep a decent pig stopped, but those kind of dogs are very hard to come by. I used to run 3 dogs, I always figured 3 was enough muscle for the big boars.
Maybe. One decent dog can stop a good boar on its own and that boar shouldn't move until the gun turns up.
Your right about the stopping part being the important part.
you can use one dog and theres lots of breeds out there. a good dog will keep a pig there for ages by itself. I use one dog and its a foxy. catches a few so proves any dog can do it
This might be a personal preference thing (and that's okay), but if you're running just one dog, is it better to have a bailer or a holder?
Right bush, the Ureweras Dougie. Nah he had a proper name like 'Grubby' after his breeder. He was a big, short haired collie not like the smaller lighter collies you see on many farms now.
He made me cry too. When he was quite old we retired him onto my brothers Dairy Farm up The Waimana Valley. He was always topdog in the area but he forgot he was old and went over to the Pa up the road as he had done many times before and the Pa dogs packed him and killed him.
He was a well known dog and bred a lot of good working and hunting pups. I was hunting ducks in Otorohanga a few years back and I saw a likely looking pup tied up at the farm. Just watching him and the way he moved reminded me a lot of old Grubby. So I went in and saw the Farmer and sure enough we managed to track the pup back several generations to a bitch that I had bred from the old bugger.
You will find a lab puppy is perfect for bailing up librarians @phillipgr
2 or 3 good bailers and stoppers:thumbsup: heelers or even better a baller. two keep each other from getting nailed without over pressuring the pig to break .with a hold command for the eater pigs
i feel no shaME THAT IVE NEVER KNIFED A BIG BOAR COS I NEVER HAD A DOG KILLED WHEN I USED BAILERS i put them before my ego and vanity and shot the big huas with a 30/30 as soon as a clear shot was available. they,d done thier job keeping the pig stopped till i got there my job was to end it before things got deadly for either of us:yaeh am not durnk:

Open country and a whippet takes some beating, rare is the pig that can drag a whippet off....
Hard bailers to.
Mates got a whippet, holy shit they are faster than light. Ten foot tall and bulletproof too
I rescued a kid goat from two bloody pig dogs today.
