    Pet insurance

    Okay guys,

We know some people whos dog got spinal cancer.
Originally the vets couldn't figure out what was wrong with it, it cost them around 8k of going to "specialists" etc just to get a diagnosis.
Now my Wife is all worried about our GSP and all her friends are telling her to get pet insurance.

Ive never believed in insurance for much more than house/contents and vehicles.
I guess as a hunting dog there is maybe a higher chance that she will injure her self or break a bone or something.
What i wanted to know is who out there has pet insurance and what experiences have people had as a whole and more specifically with different companies.

    And advice appreciated.

    Thanks

I haven't worried with any of my dogs, but then I wouldn't let the bill get to 8K, I wouldn't even let it get to 1K.

First dog for me so never really though about it. I know my parents never did, would you put them down if it got over 1K? I guess a fully trained hunting partner would be worth well over 1k, up to 3 or 4 at least and that's not including sentimental value.
Though when she whines sometimes I think thats enough of an issue to put her down lol.

I thought about it but after doing the sums it was going to cost more than my own health care just about.
I decided I was better off paying for issues that come up if they do, touch wood but nothing has really come about as of yet.

We set up a seperate account specifically for the pets and just chuck a bit of money in there with each pay. Its used to cover the normal pet bills but also has extra in there for any unexpected costs. Plus it earns a bit of interest.

Iv heard of others that used to have pet insurance doing this as the payments recently got astrinomical, and no guarantee they would pay out.

We used to give out the free insurance packages with the puppies...not heard of anyone who actually took up the offer.
With today's Vet costs I would look at it if I had a breed known to have issues, we do all we can to with health testing and many gundog breeders are also doing as much as they can.
1k will buy very little drugs or vet time for something that is fixable like a broken bone or a bout of parvovirus.

Igot pet insurance on my late mate JJ. didnt cover the wounds suffered when he tangled with sons staffy munta, but when vets discovered cancer that insurance was a frigging godsend
they paid out close on $1800 all up for his first bout of surgery and associated cares..alas the cancer like in a lot of humans didnt go away and the second time it was the inevitable one way trip.
when vet put the needle in my sure the old bugger was in final stages of heart failure-he slipped away peacefully.
Petsur were the mob i used -would i do it again -yup in a heartbeat-their service was 101%
i received a nice sympathy card on his passing and they refunded that months premiums IIRC.
    premium$10.00PW approx.

I have never used pet insurance. I have friends who have spent in excess of $10,000 on a dog for a grass seed in the lung. I couldn't do that even if I wanted.
I once needed to pay off a big bill ($800) at the vet and did it at $10.00 a week. It was paid about a year ago but I have never stopped the payment. I currently have over $500 credit with my vet... we're good.
Most policies I havee seen have been what I deem expensive and very conditional.
