Bit of pest controll for local farmer,we ended up with 22 geese and around 12 pigeons, first time for the dog paddock retrieving,he did pretty well considering the geese weigh around the same as him.
Lost my polaroid glasses at the river last night, took Bo down this arvo and he found them. He has picked up my dropped cell phone once and carried it across the river before I relized it was in his mouth and also found a mates lost vape at the river. You are right Thar labs are great!

got this girl yesterday, border collie x heading dog
not to put too fine of point on it..but a border collie IS a heading dog..... it should be very keen on sheep and wont bark unless put under pressure.
had same discussion with RUMPY the other day walking off the hill.
for me a heading dog is a job discription just like huntaway or pig dog.....
the breeeding of said dog isnt as important as how it preforms the task its asked to do.
heading dogs have natural tendency that has been bred to improve....go get stock and bring it back to the boss.... classic is to get young pup in a small paddock with sheep,go stand in middle of paddock and say nothing unless dog goes to bite...it will all of its own accord, without knowing why round up all the sheep and bring them towards you and keep doing so. also called a strong eyed sheep dog...it eyeballs the sheep till they go away in desired direction, towards the boss man.
along similar vein get in behind a mob of sheep with young huntaway pup and rush towards them shouting and clapping and pup will run up and start barking and continue to do so..its job discription is to hunt the stock away..bark at them to make them move, usually away from you .
good looking pup whatever its genetics
I think Heading Dogs have strong Border Collie lineage but the NZ Heading Dogs have other breeds I'm there as well.
They look a bit different.
From what I recall the origins of our heading dogs were 2 border collie types called Dictator and Dell. Back when the Scottish shepherds first came to nz. There is bound to be infusions of other breeds including kelpie in our current smooth hair heading dog. During the late 60's 70's they were pretty much stabilised around mainly Garry Brennan's strain which were smooth haired and tri coloured. This is the dominant type now.
When I first went to the East Coast farming in '74 there was a well known trialist back crossing heading dogs with Gordon Setters to breed a handy strain. There is strong Gordon Setter blood in our huntaways. The Hugh Griffith black huntaway strain was bound to have Labrador in it. And so on.
the blur on they eye isnt a blur, eye is brown top and blue lower. kinda neat
Asleep on the job.
