expecting to see a huge change of breeds in retriever trials after that statement.
Read it again, I never compared them to retriever breeds, that would be fool hardy. I did compare them to some of our versatile breeds here however.
My pointer is as good as any when it comes to retrieving, better than any versatile I have seen. I will go 1 further and say as good or better than most retriever breeds Ive seen.
Oskar is very keen to do his first opening day on ducks. He needs to understand that it's easier to retrieve a duck after it is shot though. Very amusing seeing him try to "retrieve" a pair of very alive parries on a dam this afternoon.
Hopefully one day he also realises that he has a pair of eyes and they can actually compliment a nose!
Tested out the new shotgun on a hare that took a gamble on how well he could hide. He lost that round.

I think he will surprise you how good he goes.
That dog is a hunter. Just a ball sack around home😆

Very, very close to giving a cat both barrels prior to the hare. Just wasn't sure if it was a pet or not, being the first visit to this farm. The damn dog would not leave a bunch of bushes alone leaving me in the dark until a moggy shot out.
Oskar sure has something deep inside his breeding that knows birds are his "deal". I'm sure he will be an acceptable deer dog but birds are in his blood.
wish i had access to some big open country for quail i do love to see a good pointer doing its thing.
i,l be careful:omg: as far as gsps go thats not saying much:yaeh am not durnk:i,ve never seen such floundering water retrieves till i got a gsp:thumbsup:Quote:
the equal of any versatile breed I have seen.

My gsp has a very strong retrieve . Struggled on geese to start but a bit more work from home and he's never looked back . holds his own against my mates lab ( that's not to shabby ) .
mine holds his own as far as retrieving goes especaly blind work and he,s not the hardest mouthed ive ever seen but in tight tangle prone ponds he dicks about.deep waters not his favourite either but he does it cos he loves to do it but a long deep water retrieve, blind or otherwise, the equal of what i can get him to do on land or low water would exceed his abilitys i think.:O_O::yaeh am not durnk:can a hpr run in a normal retriever trial??Quote:
That is a seriously ridiculous statement Jason! Raise your game!
Good question (can a hpr run in a normal retriever trial??)
No...retriever trials are for retrievers...you can't have retrievers and spaniels in a Pointer and Setter trial:D:D...that would be interesting...but HPRs can go in the All Breeds Lands and Water trials which involves retrieving...points are combined for both for an aggregate score. There were rumblings about doing away with the Lands and Water but thankfully it has been retained...I reckon more HPRs should get involved in it...I think I will enter my young bitch one day just for the fun of it...:)
No!
Thanks EeeBees it probably wouldn't be fair on the labs anyways !
no because they dont naturaly point but a hpr does naturaly retrieve:fighting::cave::playingsmiley:Quote:

standing clear and awaiting disgruntled and sarcastic replies:yaeh am not durnk:
Brace yourself, @gsp follower...:D:D
In fact, a GSP, Pointer, or any Versatile as well as spaniels and retrievers can run in a retrieving trial. The All Breeds is now able to be run as a retrieve event if that is what a club wants, and is open to All Breeds.

A few pics of Cruz - 6.5 years old by William - the top sire at Black Hills Labradors
He is good at flushing Pheasant and Quail on the farm at Athenree - but I don’t shoot them - just try to breed them for the locals - hell, some might fly over to your place Ruff
He was great at indicating fallow when I had a block up the back of Te Puke - he knew every route that we could take through the bush and he would flush deer hiding in rubbish round the farm or orchard
He now spends three days a week with me on predator control killing possums and rats at the Te Puna Quarry Park or at the farm - it has been great to keep both of us fit
He is very strong and seems incredibly intelligent - I don’t know if it is scent or memory - but he can lead me round a line of fifty bait and trap stations over several hours - either at the farm or at the Park without missing a turn in the bush - don’t let Clark try to convince you Chocolate Labs are meat heads - 35 years of Yellow Labs - two were meat heads compared to this one
Any Lab will end up overweight if you feed them too much - Black, Yellow or Chocolate - they may have different constitutions - feed and exercise them accordingly
All puppies look cute - but this is Cruz at six months old -

He can indicate a possum or rat in a trap long before we get there - indicating a nearby possum trap on Tuesday - http://i1059.photobucket.com/albums/...apping%201.jpg
A tidal estuary down the end of our street - new houses getting too close so we have banned shooting this year - he just has to watch the ducks -
http://i1059.photobucket.com/albums/...0Ducks%201.jpg
Sent him up a rock wall at the Quarry on Tuesday to see if there were any rats up there - don’t let people try to convince you that Pedigree Labs cant step over a cow shit
http://i1059.photobucket.com/albums/...%20Dog%201.jpg
I have lost the urge to kill game birds but now and again - he gets to carry a rabbit - he loves to carry dead possums - we have a game - I chuck them down the bank and he goes down and brings them back - until I get sick of it
