    Second dog

We have a pound special as a pet. From what we can tell she is a Whippet black lab cross - lovely dog with a ton of energy. Points and flushes birds naturally - so gunshy if you clap she runs for cover!

We have recently looked after someone else's dog and loved how they just tired each other out. We have a few acres that is fenced for them to run around.

I would like a dog to indicate on deer. I really like the look and size of a gsp but have been told to look at vizlas, I don't like needy dogs (which our current one can be) so aren't looking too hard at them. Are there any breeders to look at with the gsp?

The dog would be a pet with hunts in the weekend. I have ready access to farmland with plenty of reds and fallow to train on.

    Any recomendations?

Firstly I recommend that you take me to the farmland that all the reds and fallow are on so I can evaluate with my gun weather it is a suitable spot for training a dog.
Then I recommend a few repeat visits to so I can keep the deer numbers to just the right level for you and your new dog!

If you want I can start imeadatly!

Oh and if you don't want a needy dog you are correct in the decision to not go Viszla

We had a bitch years ago before they were cool and she was a fantastic dog, only slightly clingy .

Had a dog after that. It was the most pig headed pick of an animal.

Timbo, forget the pointing breeds. Good working lab. A well bred one. Thats the problem though, finding a top notch lab!

Many reasons. First one is that I know you

Getting a second dog for the reason of 'to tire the first one out' is a bad idea, respectfully. Especially if you want it to be a useful hunter. All it will do is pick up the bad habits of your first and create a pack structure you may have trouble staying on top of. I recommended a cat for this reason Exercise together sure, in a supervised manner of course, no play-fighting or "tiring each other out", and house and train separately.

The reason I mentioned the well-bred lab over the pointing breeds are, ease of training, useful in most of NZs hunting environments. Not known to be highly strung or needy. deadly on deer, great on waterfowl, and a tougher one, when older and steady, can even make do on pigs.

Now for the shitfight who can direct Timmay onto a top class lab?

I know of a bloke who's used his lab for purpose of getting working pups and I'm not sure if they been born yet . I've hunted with the dog on quails and chuckars and he's exceptional . Don't no what his lines are ill do so homework see if I can find out .
