Sharks on surf beach

Was up the coast last night surf fishing & got hammered by bloody sharks.Landed 2 but busted off by 6 others.
1st was around 5' the 2nd a bit smaller .
The point being these things are in the surf close to the beach,for those taking dogs down for a swim as we do.
Don't know if they're a problem for dogs but they're in numbers & hungry .No idea whats brought them in ,they do seem to be quite aggressive .Either sand sharks or mako's . Won't be taking my dog for a swim any time soon.
Just in case this is a general situation not just local .

what beach were you at?

Whiritoa about 200m from surf club

Bronzies Id guess first. Starting to get that time of year?

Was fishing at the Okupara reef yesterday, was doing OK on the Snappa until the Sharks turned up. Caught 4 of the bloody things. Fishing certainly disappeared when these guys arrived.

Don't think so ,wrong color & shape .Would say Sand shark but didn't have the spots along the back .

Sorry. Missed where you said you landed a couple. Do you get the runs of rays there too? Always remember when we got a patch of them come through. Like trying to drag a drowned mattress through the surf.

Yea we do get a few rays at different times ,initially was what I thought the 1st shark was.But went ballistic in the surf ,didn't like coming in shallow.Pretty obvious it wasn't a ray when had it on the sand ,but surprised how little water it needed & still be swimming.
You wouldn't need to be knee deep in water they could have you .

I'm more scared of standing on a grumpy ol ray than a shark having a nibble on a NZ surf beach.

Did you send them to the great fish and chip shop in the sky Chris?

I released both Rushy ,doubt I could of even got the bigger one off the ground let alone carry it back to my wagon.
Had 13 Kahawai & 1 good size snapper so didn't really need shark . Good fun fighting them but got some sore muscles today.

Kahawai weren't that big all round 1kg but good smoking size ,had better sessions
Was for Friday & Saturday nights though. Sharks turned up Sat; only the 6 Kahawai that night.

Definitely would not risk swimming the pooch there if the sharks are hanging around. but heck that is just pure salt inthe wounds after my attempt last weekend in that shitty wind and rough tide at bowentown lol can't wait to try there again on a calmer day and maybe whiritoa later on.

Would hate to hear some ones dog getting taken ,that'd be bloody terrible . In the numbers that where there its very possible & they regularly close the beach over summer with Mako's in the surf. They're nasty ,fast & aggressive I wouldn't trust them .

Shark fishing at Whiritoa is fun Hunter NOT . But you should try it .

One day when I can get set back up with a 24KG LBG rig again I would but I would also make damn sure I had an extra person with me for safety reasons (the other half does not count lol).

Play fair Hunter I'm only using 10kg main line on a surf rod & landed 2 .A personal biggest fish for me the 1st one.
The 6 sets of gear I lost on the ones that smoked me don't count either.

Would it help if i told ya that line on my reel you saw the other day is only 8kg (0.35mm) with a 15kg shock leader :D

Always good when you can hit your PB on 10KG and under mainline, best I ever hooked but never landed was a snapper that took me 15 minutes to get to the rocks and it bit through 80Lb trace with one chomp as it was about to be gaffed to be taken and weighed in at the beach and boat comp and that was on 10kg mainline straylining over shitloads of foul ground.

This one time at the beach this guy was swimming in the ocean yelling "Help! Shark! Help!" I just simply laughed, I knew that shark wasn't going to help him.;)
