Tilly was loving that…good on her.

Curious to know how far she winds deer, Over the last week I have had my GWP out and we stalked in a few deer, mostly the deer we seen were under 200m from where Dog first indicated. Some we actually stalked for about 400m but did not see them.

Be interested to hear your thoughts.

I am not sure if the deer are moving away or if we are just not getting to them by not walking far enough?

    Cheers again

Mine winds them from some extraordinary ranges, and can see them at long distances too. I’ve had her go all tense after her spotting deer over 400 yards away, and then when I put the binos up I’ve seen them.

One thing about in the bush, you still have to stalk in on them as you would without a dog. Depending on the wind, she will pick them up out to a few hundred yards, and then I have to decide if I want to stalk in or not. If they are a reasonable distance she sniffs the breeze with her head up. If they are real close she behaves differently. She either points, or sits. She decides what, and I’m not sure what thats all about.

The one in tonights vid, she sat at about 30 yards, and she let me stalk in the last 15 yards or so. Other times she will be right at my leg.

Hope that helps. Its all about getting to know your individual dog.

    Here she is last night.

    Thanks Thar for the response

I am still learning to hunt with the dog, definitely stalking slow and careful. The great thing is with the dog indicating I now am really looking for the deer! Last couple times out have been putting a bit more trust in the dogs ability to indicate and it is paying off. Love the partnership aspect of the stalking. We have a ways to go before we get to where you are at but am confident we on the right track.

Tilly is a great looking dog, she is producing for you too, awesome stuff!

    cheers

Bit hard on the backsteaks! In fact I haven't had a dog react like that, for some reason mine have always gone for the throat.

    A belated well done Tahr.
