Think before you snip your pup

    Hey guys,

thought I would share this info especially as a lot of vets, councils etc are pushing people to neuter their dogs asap due to the number of dogs that end up in shelters.

A large study was conducted on 2500 Vizsla's that showed neutering is bad for the dogs health in a lot of ways, this is also backed by smaller studies on golden retrievers and other breeds.
Also disproving common believe that neutering improves behavior / training - intact dogs had less behavioral issues, less fear and anxiety and were generally better to train.

Remember the number one reason that dogs end up abandoned or re-homed is behavioral problems - if neutering makes this more likely perhaps that isn't the answer to full shelters. There are now options to prevent litters without full removal of organs which may be worth exploring if you don't want to have an intact dog at home.

I have always left all my animals intact and had 2 entire males ( a 50kg Rottie and Huntaway) at the same time. No worries or problems if you teach them what is what. Dogs don't care if they are "top" dog or lower down the peaking order. What they don't like is an uncertain arrangement where the owner is sometime the boss and sometimes not. If there is uncertainty the dog will want to fill the vacant top spot and you will get the same old story of dog growling or biting the owner or kids, misses etc...
Oh and a vasectomy is way different from a neuter when the balls and hence testosterone production is gone. If behaviours ( like roaming etc...) are already established, removing nuts will do nothing for that.
I love it when the vets say "it will stop testicular cancer", or stop some problems from happening. If it's that good why don't people get their kids snipped to stop them getting "problems" later.

Vets say lotsa things but love thing like their gold plated super. Get a dog which is well bred and properly fed and exercised the only thing going to kill it is old age. Saying dogs need cutting is like saying our Minister of Police knows what she is talking about.

Could have asked if any daughters they have are going to get hysterectomies to stop them getting ovarian cancer. It is an odd way of thinking, unless like a car salesman, you are trying to upsell and sell add ons

what I find really odd is how people think its ok to neuter (they aren't broken, you aren't fixing them) before 6months - they aren't even grown yet - it's literally hampering their development...

No such thing as bad dogs, only bad owners. Now if we could neuter of have the owners put down... might see a whole new class of wolf evlove, and less shitheads to boot.
I'm not normally one to disrespect mums and dads but your owners must have been real bad

Everyone's different.... I had my youngest dog done as easily as I could as we have the mother and wanted another litter off her and not from her son

we've been talking about this subject regarding our vizsla lately . So being a first time owner don't actually know what is involved . I assumed it is just a snip the lines thing or do they remove his nuts completely ?
I don't want it done any time soon but know of several others that have been chopped at the same age supposedly due to getting aggressive/rough with family members and was done to supposedly calm them down .
We have also heard that chopping to early can cause testi cancer ...(?)
We are hoping to maybe breed at least once with him and have been asked by several people who wish to produce a litter with their females but can't find a male that hasn't already had the chop done , so it would seem to be standard procedure with vizsla to chop asap at an early age .

I'm a believer in letting them fully mature intact whether dog or bitch the way nature intended to ensure growth happens properly with the right levels of testosterone etc in the system to control the process. Once mature then get them fixed if that's what you want.

I'm much the same. my last dog had prostate problems so had to have it done, otherwise I would have kept them on him.
