Lot of sheepdogs have had a leg tucked into their collar to slow them down and develop attention span.
They can get along pretty well.
Had a beagle it had its front leg removed because of cancer , would swear it had six legs when it saw a cat she could still honk along to the discomfort of many a cat
Not good news , I hope for a good outcome for you and your dog . it's encouraging the feed back regarding 3 leged dogs .

At the vets now. Not really expecting a good outcome as he has gone downhill in the short time between visits.

That's sad news indeed. If you can take any thing out of this , Know that he has led very happy life in the time he has been your companion and some time this answer is the best solution.
