    Training Ace

Having seen the quality of my mates dog using the deer dog blueprint method of training I thought I'd have a go myself.
It's not easy with a family to do what he says and I'm not very good at sticking to the rules.

I have probably hit the bush a little early(6mnths) but he did well yesterday. First taking me in on some pigs(couldn't quite find them but they were close in front in tight stuff) then too many hours later finding the first bit of goat shit for the day.
At that point he started to hackle up but with blustery wind I couldn't pin down where it was. Knowing the steep country above I decided to see if I could find his bluff and sure enough, when I did, there was a scattering of sign from 3 or so goats.
I then used this as a good ground sent to help him take me back to where we'd been winding the goat and he pretty much put me 10m away in tight steep bush. Gave him a 308 sub(+two more for certainty) and Aces first game animal was on the ground.

Thought I'd put it on here so I can look back one day and see where it all started with him.

Hey stranger. Chris and I are still out fishing enough to stress our marriages and spending April in the bush as is our responsibility to keep the worlds stag numbers down

I don't say much on forums anymore. Too many shit fights over the years left me burnt lol. You still chasing roosters? Need to get Chris back into it. He loved it but doesn't have a capable mut since his last one got twisted bowel.

Yeah. Bonus having a reminder of his first hunt. He doesn't point much. Hoping he puts more pointing in as time goes on. Maybe he just hadn't thrown enough towards his dad.

I've done plenty before Ryan. I was a culler for doc. Using indicator dogs(eye dog) with hi cap mags and semis. Eventually we just did too good a job up here and there was no work left.

This is just the first time I've really gone down a trainers' system. Left alot of good goat heads on the hill until I met another fella from the old forum and found an interest in trophys. Started keeping a few after that although biggest is still only 36". Shame to think of the ones left to rot. Mind you I wasnt going to carry goat heads everywhere as I worked.

Mind you I've done almost no deer over a dog so I'm keen as hell on that.

Mutt. His dad a pure GSP but the mum is a bitser pig dog. I decided to go with it as I've a had a gsp way back and was too much energy. The mum was a calm dog so figured it might cancel some of the crazy, which it seems to have done. He's pretty calm for a pup. Almost no noise or whining. Reasonable brain. Not stupid but no genius. I just wish he'd point as I like that.
I see one guy on YouTube encourages his dog to raise the leg during training so will keep trying that. Not the end of the world if he doesn't.

Well, a week later and trying to put an animal in front of Ace to cement last week's effort.

He did well telling me I was onto some. Couldn't quite place where they were but found them up the gut above me in some seriously steep bluffs. First a juvenile Billy then a slightly older one. Knocked the bigger one over and Ace had his second(once we'd travelled a hundred metres down into the creek where he'd cartwheeled to).
Left after talking the wheels off him even though ace was picking up a little wind. He also picked up another on the way back but I avoided it and hit the track for the hour and a half back to the car.
