    Training scent

    Hey guys

I have picked up a deer hide from the butcher and I have frozen a quarter of it.

I have a lot left over and is it worth preserving somehow to use for scent training? I don’t have any space in the freezer for it now.

I have the deer dog blueprint but won’t be following it so closely due to the dog living in the wash house already.

Any tips on the scent training?

    Cheers

You could try salting and drying it?
find a place and set up a drag. See if the dog is interested.

Good excuse for a bigger freezer. I'd prob try air drying some to try and preserve the deer smell.

Thanks guys, I am thinking along the lines of air drying and salting it.
Do I need to scrape all the flesh and fat off before I do so?

A new freezer is definitely on my shopping list over the next few months

air dry a strip of it, its only used at the end of a drag anyway.. i just freeze a couple of feet to start the tracking process then progress to a spray bottle filled with the moisture and blood from a fresh wet skin, then progress to just the blood only.
