Thread: Watering dogs on the hill

A big problem for me is getting enough water into the mutts. I don't run them when it's hot of course but still have trouble keeping it up to them. Hunting in some rather dry area's doesn't help but they get water when they get out of the box and when ever I know of a damp spot on the hills.

So the question has anyone found a good way to water them on the hill? Keep looking at those blader thing's thinking they could work, only thing is it seems they don't free pour. At least all the ones I've seen don't seem too.

Wirehunt, check out the MSR dromedary bags. Much tougher material than bladders, and they have a spout that free pours. I use one as a camp water bag, roll it up empty in my pack when not in use.

My lab drinks out of my water bottle in the hills.

WH, you could fill it and chuck it in a pack no worries, kind if like a soft wobbly water bottle

They do not have a drinking tube like the bladders, so you have to take the bag out to drink or dispense water, but they are a hell of a lot tougher than the plastic bladders. I've had one strapped to the outside of a pack, and it got scuffed up etc, no leaks.

What is nice as well is that they have a huge threaded filling cap (bomb-proof thread), and a small flip-up spout. Have a look on youtube, should have some reviews etc.

Hmmm, this is used daily so that's why the bladder type I think. Screw taking it out to use.

Plastic cup and extra canteen for mine. Plus mountain streams. Sometimes take 4x1.25 litre canteens if need be. Having a bit of water discipline yourself goes a long way. Small sips not big gulps so there's some left for the dog is doable on longer trips. A mate of mine straps his dogs water in bottles to the dogs harness which works well for him.

You need a small water tank towed behind the quad

If I hunted them off the quad I wouldn't be asking

What about getting the dogs to carry their own water?

In theory great. In practice that would last five minutes on a slack day.

The record on collars lost is 5 in one day. And that wasn't hunting it was just a wee run to let them empty.

I use a bladder out of a wine cask. Fits 3L each. And squash down to FA when empty. Ther are very durable and last me years!
