    Welsh springer spaniel

Anyone have one of these gorgeous dogs as a family pet, and occasional deer dog?
It’s normally around this time that we have another kid, but we are done with that. Thinking about getting our first dog.
My wife’s sister has a pure springer bitch, and was thinking about breeding her. She has asked us if we want a pup and seriously considering it.
I lost a deer last year after I shot it and couldn’t find it, and ever since have wanted a dog to help track.

    Cheers

Haha not as bad as it sounds. That’s been the pattern for the last 10 years. One kid every three and a half years. Three down, and time for the fourth (fur baby)

Temple Sutherland had a spaniel that was superb on deer features a lot in his books. We are talking 80 to 90 years ago but I guess it still holds true.

had one years back, he made it to 16 Yr but the last couple he could not do much.
He did a lot of tramping but no hunting with me. Mate grabbed him from the Waitawheta river on one occasion when he miss-judged how swift it was.
Loved water, would think nothing of swimming across the Waikato River in Hamilton North to chase ducks and then swim back.
Took him until he was 8 to settle down but that's largely my fault.

Ps son has a 1yr old English which would make a Good hunter. Needs to settle down and slow down, however in the 3 weeks he was with us over Xmas he caught 3 birds and 2 rats.
I still think the Welsh Springer looks nicer than an English, not so heavy in the head, better colour, and the English can have dominance issues that you need to be careful of.

Looks like a mini Red & White Setter which I like. Mine was a smallish Dog. very friendly, great with kids and other dogs, Good watch dog, Sure he saved us being burgled on a couple of occasions. Not sure how they would go in a guard dog role, too friendly, unlike my current Gordon Setter, Not a people fan until he's had time to get to know them on his terms.

My Welshey was self grooming, after a weekend in the bush etc he would come back with a coat full of crap. I would pull out the large heavy stuff and them he would spend the next hours using his teeth to strain all the crap out of his fur. Next morning you would find a little pile of twigs, leaves, blackberry etc.
NB watch the ears if the dog is doing lots of water time in poor quality Waikato river water.
