What would you pay for a pup?

    Hi all.

We’re considering breeding Sacha, our 2 year old lab / vizsla cross. We haven’t done this before but are under no illusions about the time, cost & risk involved, so we’re trying to decide if it’s worth it.

She’s a gorgeous dog with a strong hunting drive and has been a dream to train. As she’s not purebred we will probably look to put a vizsla or vizslador sire over her so the vizsla traits don’t get watered down too much.

A friend of mine did a Gsp x Gwp cross. They had no trouble selling them for $800. They were advertised as "hunting dogs" I'm pretty sure the bitch has never been hunting in her life!

We paid $300 for our Collie/Lab/? bittza from TM and $1000 for our King Charles Spaniel (the next litter sold for $2000 each) Both pet dogs. So I'd guess that for a Vizsla cross with a proven hunting heritage you could easily be looking near $2000

All depends on location, also timing off litter. The market has been flooded last couple years.
A litter of pups is a lot of work if you look after the pups by changing bedding etc, bitch may require extra supplements during and after.
$500 a pup i would say where its at. Might sound like shit loads of money six pups $3000. Its a lot more work then people realize especially if you are looking after the bitch and pups properly.
Then you need a bit of a basic set up with cage and box with a bit of room for them as they get older

It used to be that x bred were cheaper but nowadays they are called "Designer Dogs" Poodle x anything is expensive because it's easier because of the reduced sheading.

The term is SPCA Specials, I cannot fathom people paying huge money for in essence "mutts" with promises like . don't shed and low allergies............usually sold to unsuspecting new dog owners!!!

    I'd pay $500 tops for a crossbred.
And if I was paying good money for a purebred it would be my dog and there would be no clauses.
It shits me when a breeder sells a pup for crazy money then puts no breeding clauses on it. Or reserves the right to get a litter from it.
If I were to pay their price, I'd be doing whatever I wanted with the pup and they would loose all rights once the money changed hands.
Some of the best dogs I've owned have come from accidental matings too.

Bit of a mine field this one. I have a bitch with papers and have bred 2 litters. Essentially 3 months out of action for both you and the dog. Last litter was a c section, $2000. Then she got mastitis so 2 trips to the after hours vet $1500.
Stud fee is the equivalent of a pup.
You walk a fine line of setting a price that will cover costs plus a bit and finding homes for your pups.
There can also be complications if a pup develops a problem later on.
A lot depends on your own personal ethics and attitudes towards the welfare of your dog and the pups.
Some people are very straight up and easy to deal with, others are a bleedin nightmare.
To be honest I'm not sure how you value a xbred pup other than putting up a price and taking enquiries.

I think it's retarded breeding dogs just for shits and giggles. Sure if you have buyers lined up wanting pups from a proven dog then knock yourself out but there's enough dogs already in this country that have shit lives, get put down, or end up wards of the spca etc to just go breeding your dog for no real reason.
