Lets just say you have just lost a WHP.
Where would you go.

Hunter is approaching 60, and has hip problems can walk for miles though but cannot run after a misbehaving dog
Wants an alrounder with bidable personality .

Probably last dog for me, if I can get 12-14 yrs out of him/her then I'm well into my 70's

Is there any other choice but a Black Lab (Bitch)

Sheep dog/heading dog will be my next choice after a Vizsla

Oh and as much as people dont like them an electric collar saves ya hips

love my cocker spaniel......my fault I didnt go to reputable breeder so now have an 11 year old blind dog with huge heart for the hunt....
current bitch is mongrel...beardy/lab/gsp
both are biddable
lab is obvious choice as will be happy to just lie in sun and enjoy your company on days when hunting isnt going to happen...but my cocker is the same....

It's important that the dog can retrieve and is self motivated to do so.

Pointer but I am biased and in your case perhaps one not from a pup (so the mad stage has passed)

Will retrieve, has a good On/Off switch . Good on birds, OK on deer (at least the first 2 were). great in the house and good company anywhere

Bad points are they suffer the cold.

Yes the wire wasn't too bad down here but he still shook and shivered if I didn't dry him pretty quick or keep him busy
I really think I have answered my own question but just thought someone as @Tahr may have a different perspective.
Dog will be down south, so cold winters hot summers in the central otago regions.

Wirehunt was doing his best to give me a whippet last night, now that is not going to happen.
Chesapeake ? summers too hot?

@Ginga runs one of these and the "Hyena" is as good if not better than any dog I've seen.

Got a mate who has. rather had them.Every time I went around there, if i didn't watch out, I got my calves and the back of my ankles nipped.
Possibly not the most grandchild friendly dog.
