Thread: The new cnc lathe has arrived.

Nearly 6 months to get here, shes big and heavy, 8 tons, twin spindle multi axis lathe, took half the day to get it into the shop.
Looking forward to getting it up and running, the last few months we have been having a really hard time keeping stock on the shelf.

Everything we do at the moment is on the website DPT Machinists - DPT Machinists but we are going to be bringing out new products soon, will keep the forum posted.

Did you have CNC machine before DPT ? Programming on that monster would be a steep learning curve.

Yup we did, much smaller and without live tooling Y axis and sub spindle, so the new one will be much more complex to program.
We will have both lathes running for a few months just to get stock built up.

No.

Mrs Kiwi and I had coffee with her the other day.

Fair to say she's onto you ... you should consider digging yourself a secret "room" under the house to hide all the stuff you buy

Aside from the cnc we will shortly be offering chambering and barrel fluting services.
And most likly bedding at some stage.

With a Twin spindle lathe and a Five Axis Machine centre there is nothing you couldn't make.

Try and do that on a Cincinnati or Bridgeport.

When I was an apprentice toolmaker we got the first CNC lathe in Hawkes Bay ...... Had to write the code on a ticker tape then tread this into the lathe.

And I though that was out of this world.

Very nice, live tooling is cool. Guess you got bar feed n parts catcher? G codes are very interesting - used to use a small Mazack?
That was very user friendly and they got a morseki? Not long before I left can't remember if it had the driven tailstock -she was a fancy bit of kit. If I had a spare 40k I'd be all over a small cnc for my side of the garage. We put it up after the quakes and the concrete placer recons you could park a tank on the pad

I'm guessing that about now you are wishing you had spent the extra $70k and gone for the Okuma?

When i was machine shopping Victor was not even on my list of considerations. Rule #1 is never believe the salesman. Rule #2 - Always do your homework. There are some good taiwanese machines out there now, but there is some pretty average stuff too. If you are going for twin spindle or big machines and high accuracy, the commodity grade machines are going to fall short of expectations. Kind of like comparing a vortex or konus scope with a nightforce or s&b.

Hope you can get the issues sorted out by the dealer, you shouldnt be having to diagnose stuff yourself. After all, you're not far from auckland now and they should have a tech down there for you pronto. Good luck with it.
